Microsoft builds Mobile Communicator for Nokia smartphones

Microsoft and Nokia partnered last year to build more ways to use Office software with phones made by the mobile handset maker. The two companies said they now have hundreds of engineers working together.

On Wednesday, the two companies released their first product from the strategic alliance, a mobile app called Microsoft Communicator Mobile for Nokia.

The free software integrates Nokia's E series smartphone with Microsoft Communication Server software. Communications Server is Microsoft's unified messaging software that allows people to use PCs for video conferencing, phone calls and instant messaging. With the new service, someone using a Nokia smartphone can see from the contact list on the phone whether the other person is busy, in a meeting or free to talk.

"In an enterprise setting this is remarkably helpful because you’re able to reach out and communicate with someone," said Stephen Elop, president of Microsoft Business division. "I can tell from looking at this that Kai is in a meeting because of an orange indicator. Then, instead of using the phone, I can send an instant message to him. What’s really exciting is that we’re bringing into the family office communication."

Kai Oistamo, executive vice president of devices for Nokia in Finland, called it a "really state-of-the-art solution for enterprises integrating the desktop environment, cloud environment and mobile environment."

Nokia has shipped more than 10 million E series phones, he said. Nokia considers Research In Motion its main competitor. RIM makes the BlackBerry mobile phone.

The new app is available for download starting Wednesday. The integration does not require installing new server software for companies that already use Office Communication Server.

The app took awhile to locate because it's not getting promoted on Nokia's mobile app store Ovi, but it is in there. I found it
