NEW DELHI: Fancy listening to a radio station in Mumbai sitting in Delhi? Leading radio channel Radio Mirchi has partnered the country's largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel, to make it a reality.

Radio Mirchi will power a service that will allow Airtel mobile users to access Radio Mirchi stations in a dozen regions, including Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi. The service will be hosted on a technology platform powered by Spice Digital.

“Mobile radio is going to be a good business proposition in the coming months. We want to leverage it now. Radio is a very big draw among the Indian population,” said Prashant Pandey, CEO of Radio Mirchi. The radio channel is also looking at similar alliances with other mobile service providers in the country to expand the service network, he added.

Mirchi Mobile is a platform where Airtel users can dial 59830 and start listening to the radio station of their choice. This means that an Airtel customer in Karnataka will be able to listen to Mirchi in Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and many other languages, simply by subscribing to the service for Rs 10 a week.

Through the service, Mirchi Mobile is targeting the migrant population who are far from their homes and would be able to listen to radio in their native language. The service will go live in Delhi and Mumbai on Monday and will be made available across India soon.

“This is the first time we are attempting this and we are upbeat about the service,” said Airtel Mobile director marketing (mobile services) Shireesh Joshi. “It is also for the benefit of regions where radio feeds do not reach. It has a huge market potential.”

The private radio industry, which has seen an influx of a number of private players, is currently worth around Rs 800 crore and is growing at an annual average rate of 30% while the Indian mobile industry has over 500 million users with over 15 million users being added every month.
