Mumbai has 1,830 illegal telecom towers

Despite huge hue and cry and the prescribed norms for installation of telecom towers, the issue continues to raise concerns. In a recent instance 1,830 of the 3,705 mobile towers, a straggering 49 percent, in Mumbai were found to be illegal.

According to Maharashtra’s Minister of state (urban development) Bhaskar Maharashtra’s Jadhav on Tuesday there towers do not have requisite permissions. He said that the figures are based on a citywide survey conducted in 2011. He said that action will be taken against officers and senior police inspectors whose neglet resulted in mushrooming of such towers.

Before installation of towers, service providers are also required to obtain necessary clearances from concerned local authorities/State Govt. bodies.

There have been some complaints regarding some towers being installed without obtaining requisite clearance from local authorities concerned. It is for the local authorities to take action against these agencies concerned in such situation.
