Nat Geo to co-produce show with NHNZ

MUMBAI: National Geographic Channels International (NGCI) has announced its co-production with NHNZ in the making of the new eight-part series Bite Me with Dr. Mike Leahy.

Premiering in August, the series follows Dr. Mike as he scours the globe for some of the most bizarre – and tiniest – killers in the animal kingdom.

In Bite Me with Dr. Mike Leahy, Dr. Mike – a virologist by trade – travels to popular tourist destinations to learn more about the lethal beasties who call these places home. Under the watchful eye of a paramedic accompanying the crew, he explores the science behind their secret weapons, allows himself to be exposed and highlights how travellers can avoid an unwanted close encounter.

He climbs a 30-metre mountain of cockroach-infested bat guano in Borneo, gets up close and personal with an explosive-firing beetle in India.

Erection-inducing spiders, acid-spewing ants, the world’s only venomous primate and a frisky fish able to weave its way up a man’s urethra are some of the characters Dr. Mike encounters along the way.

After the series premiered in Brazil, the co-producers quickly doubled their order from four to eight hour-long shows, NHNZ executive producer Andrew Waterworth explains.

NHNZ executive producer Andrew Waterworth says, “Our crew was given the task of shooting a transmissible pilot. What they came back with was so engaging and impressive, that the series quickly morphed into eight hours of programming that features a whole new style set to satisfy the most ardent travel junkie”.

NGCI executive VP content Sydney Suissa says, “Bite Me with Dr. Mike Leahy represents another fruitful partnership for NGCI and NHNZ. Dr. Mike has an infectious enthusiasm for the creatures that makeas one's skin crawl and his vast knowledge about these creepy-crawlies combined with a dynamic personality is certain to make him a viewer favourite.”
