Nick buys India telecast rights for Casper from DQE

MUMBAI: Nick has acquired the broadcast rights of Casper, a 3D animated TV series, for the Indian territory while conceding it to rival Cartoon Network in the US.

The acquisition of the property, co-produced by DQE, Classic Media (USA) and MoonScoop Group (France), goes on to prove the aggressive intent of the Viacom18 channel as it takes on market leader Turner International and The Walt Disney Television International in the lucrative Indian market.

The rights for four years is stitched with DQE for an undisclosed amount and comes close on the heels of Nick acquiring the TV rights of Little Krishna for two years for the South Asian territory, the first ever local content acquisition made by the kids channel for the Indian market.

"Casper is an important property for us," says Nick India SVP and GM Nina Elavia Jaipuria.

The series has been produced at a budget of $9.36 million and will be broadcast on the Viacom18 channel from November across South Asia. Casper has already launched on TF1 in France and will be broadcast on Cartoon Network in the US.

DQE holds all rights to the series in India and a few other Asian territories. The Hyderabad-based animation company will share 35 per cent of the TV series' licensing income in other overseas territories while the two co-producing partners will pocket the rest.

Says DQE Chairman and CEO Tapaas Chakravarti, "We have grown up reading and watching the escapades of this friendly ghost and it is a privilege to now produce this series with Classic Media and Moonscoop for generation-next. DQE is pleased to be involved in the production of yet another iconic brand and we are grateful to Nickelodeon to play host to this lovable and friendly ghost on their network in some very important territories."
