A low cost monoblock phone, the Nokia 2690 sells itself by not only offering very good value for money, but also by being (in our opinion) one of the most attractive handsets in Nokia's range.

Billed as an "entertainment device", the Nokia 2690 has an MP3 player and FM radio, plus a microSD slot that supports cards up to 8GB and a 3.5mm audio socket.

Nokia 2690 in yukky pink The rest of the phone is fairly basic, with a 1.8" 128 x 160 pixel TFT display, VGA resolution (0.3 megapixel) camera with very basic video capture support, GPRS and EDGE data, Bluetooth, a web browser and email client. The standard sales package includes a WH-102 stereo wired headset, although you'll need to supply your own microSD card.

This is a very pocket-friendly device weighing a fraction under 81 grams and measuring 108 x 46 x 14mm. Talktime is up to 4.5 hours with a maximum of 13 days standby time. The 2690 is a quad-band GSM phone with the Series 40 interface that millions of users are familiar with.

Nokia say that the 2690 is priced at just €54 before tax and subsidy - this is very good value for money when you consider that the phone supports Bluetooth and expandable memory and ships with a headset.

There are four different colours - Graphite, White Silver, Hot Pink and Blue. In our view, the White Silver version is the best looking of the bunch with echoes of the elegant 6300 in its design.

Nokia say that the 2690 should be available from Q1 2010, so sadly it won't be available for Christmas. When you consider the combination of looks and value, we think that the Nokia 2690 should turn out to be a very popular handset.
