One of the world’s largest mobile manufacturers, Nokia, has finally revealed the upcoming of the Linux-based operating system, MeeGo, in the N-series phones from its abode. The latest Nokia N-series handset is the Nokia N9, and shall feature the latest MeeGo operating system, and not the Symbian operating system which used to be found on the earlier handsets of the Nokia N-series.

The Nokia N9 follows the footsteps of the popular Nokia N900, which featured as the first Maemo-based handset. Maemo is said to be the predecessor of MeeGo operating system, and has been developed by Intel and Nokia together. Nokia has successfully announced that Nokia N8 was the last phone of the Nokia N-series, which shall feature the Symbian ^3 operating system, though the Symbian platform will be used in the Nokia X-series, C-series and the E-series.

Though the Nokia N9 specifications have not yet been formally announced, the attributes of this feature-rich handset couldn’t stay in shade for long, and some of them have got leaked on the web. According to the latest news, the Nokia N9 handset shall be accompanied by an 8 MP camera, followed by a 4 inch multi-touch capable capacitive touchscreen, though these specifications have not yet been confirmed by Nokia.

Accompanied by an attractive slide-out QWERTY keyboard, the Nokia N9 looks quite appealing with the stylish look and shiny finish. According to Techno Buffalo, who managed to persuade Negri Electronics to part with the handset for a few hours after showing it off on video the other day, some of the confirmed specifications include the nHD Display (640 x 360), NAM 3G Bands (850 / 1900), and two cameras. The front camera is most probably a VGA one, which will most likely support the LED flash. The rear camera is the 8 MP camera with Dual-LED flash support.

Also supported by impressive and required features like the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the Nokia N9 handset is also provided with an HDMI Out. Even some sources reveal that Nokia is also trying to combine OVI services into this MeeGo device. The handset has been highly rumored and some even suggest of it being accompanied by the Symbian ^3 platform. But, according to Nokia, as it has already announced of N8 being the last Symbian enabled N-series handset, this phone will be the first MeeGo device.

As of the user interface of the MeeGo enabled handsets, some screenshots have been revealed for that and does seem quite new and different from its pre-cursor Maemo, and rather very different compared to the Symbian platform. The User Interface seems to be an inspiration from the Android and the WebOS.

For the updated and confirmed information on this much-awaited device, we need to wait a bit longer, and words have come that the device is to be released in October this year. Looks like the patient wait is about to end!
