Over 900 Web sites defaced in March

Attacks on Indian Web sites are on the rise with over 900 incidents of Web site defacements reported during March 2010, up from 510 Web sites targeted in the previous month.

With this, the total number of Indian Web sites that came under attack by hackers during the first three months of the calendar year has shot up to 1,981 – over five times the levels seen in the year-ago period.

Last year, about 384 such incidents were reported between January and March.

According to defacement statistics compiled by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), over 65 per cent of the Web sites targeted in March belong to ‘.in' domain, while over 25 per cent defacement incidents occurred in the ‘.com' domain.

The ‘.org' and ‘.net' domains were also targeted by hackers, although these were relatively few.

No details given

CERT-In – a nodal agency under Government that analyses and responds to cyber attacks and intrusions into ICT networks – did not divulge the details of specific Indian Web sites which were targeted or the originating location of such attacks.

Over the past few months, there have been heightened concerns over attempts by hackers to penetrate Government computers, especially in sensitive Government agencies.

In an interview to a British daily, earlier this year, the then National Security Advisor, Mr M.K. Narayanan, had reportedly said that his office and other government departments were targeted by hackers on December 15, 2009, the same day that US companies had complained of cyber attacks from China.

This month, a report ‘Shadow in the Clouds' by Canadian and American researchers based at the University of Toronto claimed that a spy operation called ‘Shadow Network' based out of China has tapped into classified information of the Indian Government by hacking computer systems.

However, the Chinese government has denied any role in the attacks.
