Pakistan spinners rip through West Indies

PROVIDENCE, Guyana (Reuters) - Saeed Ajmal captured four wickets on Thursday as Pakistan's spinners combined to reduce West Indies to 209 for nine at the close of the opening day of the first test.

Ajmal's victims included opener Lendl Simmons, who top-scored with 49 after retiring hurt on 41, and the obdurate Shivnarine Chanderpaul who made 27.

Mohammad Hafeez and Abdur Rehman bagged two wickets each while left-arm paceman Wahab Riaz got the other one as the home side struggled to bat through the day on a pitch offering plenty of assistance to Pakistan's three spinners.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the home side batted patiently in the first session to overcome the early departure of Devon Smith for 13 in the sixth over and reach lunch on 66-1.

But Pakistan picked up another two wickets in the middle session then six more after tea to finish in a commanding position. Five of the nine wickets that fell were lbw, including three to Ajmal.

Medium-pacer Wahab Riaz trapped Darren Bravo for 25 with an in-swinger that hit him low on the front pad then struck Simmons on his left knee when he was on 41.

Simmons survived a loud appeal but the impact left him writhing in pain and he hobbled off retired hurt.

He returned after the fall of the seventh wicket, adding eight more runs before falling agaonisingly one short of his maiden test half-century.

Afridi replaced as Pakistan ODI captain

Islamabad, (AFP): Pakistan cricket chief Ijaz Butt appointed Misbah-ul-Haq on Thursday to replace Shahid Afridi as one-day captain for a two-match series against Ireland this month.

Butt said Afridi will play as an ordinary member of the team despite leading Pakistan to a 3-2 one-day series win over the West Indies earlier this month.

The switch is likely to be seen as punishment for Afridi's public criticism of coach Waqar Younis' alleged interference in team selection.

"Misbah will lead Pakistan in the two matches against Ireland and Afridi will play as a member (of the team) only," the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman told a news conference.

Ireland hosts Pakistan for two matches on May 28 and 30.

The 31-year-old Afridi took over as Pakistan captain last year and guided the team to the World Cup semi-final where they lost to India - who went on to win the final - in March.

After the series against the West Indies, Afridi accused Waqar of meddling in team selection upon his return home on May 9. "Everyone should do his job and should be answerable for his duties," Afridi said. When asked about his differences with Waqar, Afridi replied: "They are not at a stage where we cannot resolve them."

The PCB asked Afridi to explain why he violated the code of conduct that prohibits players from speaking to the media on team affairs. Afridi replied by saying he did not name Waqar. On Monday, he left for the United States for a private family visit and he will join the team in Ireland.

The rest of the members were in the West Indies, where they play the second and final Test at St. Kitts starting Friday.

Squad: Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Younis Khan, Taufiq Umar, Mohammad Hafeez, Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Salman, Saeed Ajmal, Abdur Rehman, Umar Akmal, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Tanvir Ahmed, Junaid Khan and Hammad Azam.
