Panasonic announce a slew of cameras

Today, Panasonic launched a slew of camera models to extend their range of cameras available in India. Ranging from their top of the line DSLR-like camera to a compact bodied consumer camera, they've got something new for users from all segments.

Most prominent among the new ones is the Lumix DMC-GH1. Following the original G1, the newer Lumix DMC-GH1 becomes the second camera to be based on the recent Micro Four Thirds standard, and the first to boast HD movie recording. It sports a 12.1 MP high speed live MOS sensor and the Venus Engine HD image processor that features 2 CPUs for image processing. It comes with a stock 14-140 mm MEGA OIS enabled lens that gives 10x zoom. The stock lens is really good with sturdy build quality.

So what's so great about the GH1, you may ask. For starters, the GH1 has HD video recording and output. You can either shoot a full HD video at 25 fps or a smooth HD video (720p) at 50 fps. The GH1 now allows full PASM control for shooting videos; which means you now have control over the exposure, aperture, ISO sensitivity and AF even while capturing video. The video mode also offers intelligent scene selector and OIS. The GH1 also features, full Dolby stereo sound recording, improved OIS and scene selector.

From the demos that I have seen, these features look very promising but the GH1 didn't quite perform to my expectations when I tried to click a few pictures. It seems Panasonic is banking too heavily on the video recording superiority of the GH1 to make it popular. But I would want to hold back my judgement till I am done with reviewing the GH1.

Available for mind boggling price of Rs. 99,998, this is one of those cameras that only early adopters would want to buy. I have no reservations, but if video recording prowess is what I am looking at, I'd rather go for a proper camcorder that would cost me a whole lot less, at least for now.

Other cameras launched here are,

DSC ZX1

This slim design camera is aimed at users who want style and mobility. It comes with a 12.1 MP sensor and a 25mm wide angle lens with 8x optical zoom capability.

FZ35

Successor to the FZ28, Panasonic's FZ35 comes with a 12.1 MP sensor and a 27-486 mm 18x optical zoom lens. Apart from the improvements in video recording, OIS and focusing systems, the FZ 35 has improved battery life (for up to 470* pictures).

Pricing details for the above model will be available only after their officially launch in the market after the 7th of September.
