S Tel launches GSM services in Assam

The company will shortly be expanding its wings to the remaining cities of Assam and other North East states including Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Arunanchal Pradesh.

S Tel, a joint venture between Siva Group and Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco), embarked upon the next phase of its growth by announcing the launch of its GSM services in Assam starting with 26 key towns. Amongst the new set of telecom entrants on the Indian mobile landscape, S Tel leads the way with foray into the North East region.

The company will shortly be expanding its wings to the remaining cities of Assam and other North East states including Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Arunanchal Pradesh.

Speaking on the occasion of S Tel’s launch of services in Assam, Shamik Das, CEO, S Tel said, “We view mobile technology as important element for advancing socio-economic development in the state of Assam with teledensity as low as 31%.Our strategy is aimed at making benefits of mobility accessible first to under-penetrated markets of Assam and then gradually expanding to bigger towns, thus aiming to bridge the stratum divide as we roll out our services in phases across the region. Tinsukia, Sibsagarh, Noagoan, Tezpur and Bongaigaon are some key locations among the 26 towns in which S Tel’s services can be accessed presently. By the end of this year, we plan to expand our reach across 90 major towns of Assam. We aim to provide a congestion free network with excellent voice quality to consumers in our markets of operation.”

Some other towns in Assam which will now be able to enjoy S Tel's quality network include Gaurisagar, Nazira, Golaghat, Numaligarh, Hojai, Doboka, Lumding, Lanka, Diphu, Howraghat, Mangaldoi, Barpeta Road, Bilasipara etc.

Commenting on S Tel’s value proposition for this market, Mr.Das added, “Today, we are the only new telecom operator which has managed to garner a whopping 1 million subscriber base in a record 90 days in the 3 circles where we are present. Being a brand that speaks the language of the local communities and 'belong' to them, it resonates in everything we do – be it our tariffs, VAS, Customer care or Distribution.”
Building an emotional connect by using iconic imagery of regional landmarks and figures that are known to evoke a strong sense of pride amongst the locals is characteristic of S Tel’s brand communication.

To cater to the needs of its target segment, the company announced product offerings that aspire to uncomplicate the lives of consumers by being simple, transparent and easy to understand with no hidden charges. Some highlights of the tariffs include:
Starter Pack of Rs.49 with 30 days validity. S Tel also offers per second plan (1 p/ sec) with recharge of Rs. 6 only with the starter pack
Limited Period Launch Offer - Full Talk Time on all top - up denominations. This is the first time that any operator has launched such an offer in the market. Also highly affordable Rs. 11 SMS Pack, offering 1paisa/ local SMS, valid for 30 days have been introduced for consumers in Assam

S Tel offers a bouquet of competitively priced VAS on both, SMS and voice platform. It has innovative VAS services on offer for customers in Assam such as S Tel Caller Tune, S Tel Voice Station and S Tel Rich SMS Service. Through these, a wide range of entertainment and information services can be availed.
