Sharad Pawar comes clean of IPL tax issue

MUMBAI: Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar has got a clean chit from the Bombay High Court on the issue of entertainment tax exemption to the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Hearing on the PIL (public interest litigation) filed by Shiv Sena MLA Subhash Desai, the division bench of Justices P B Majumdar and Anup Mohta disposed off the case.

Desai had alleged in the litigation that as Pawar has close association with the BCCI, the state government did not impose the tax on the IPL matches held in Mumbai.

However, the court observed that there is “nothing on record” to show that Pawar influenced the Maharashtra government's decision to exempt IPL matches from entertainment tax, noted PTI.

The Bombay High Court also rejected Desai’s demand that tax be collected retrospectively from the IPL.

Giving a relief to state government, the court also said that "it is not possible to say that tax was not collected with any ulterior motive" in the latest IPL season, as the decision to exempt sport matches dated back to 1964.
