Shifting of IPL to South Africa challenged in Supreme Court

New Delhi (PTI): The decision to shift the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket competition by BCCI from India to South Africa was on Thursday challenged in the Supreme Court which declined to hear the issue before the start of the event from April 17.

The court posted the hearing of the PIL for April 20 but indicated that nothing much can be done as IPL and BCCI were not the government agencies and the event has been shifted to another country in view of the general elections.

"Some people think election is more important," a Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and P Sathasivan said when advocate Harsh Vardhan Surana, who has filed the PIL, said the issue concerns national pride and reputation of the country.

The Bench expressed its concern in interfering with the decision to shift IPL matches out of the country saying "IPL is a private agency".

The advocate alleged shifting of the IPL to a foreign country was an anti-national act and demeaning for every citizen's self respect.

He said shifting of IPL to another country was also a huge business loss for India.
