London (PTI): The Oscar-winning team of 'Slumdog Millionaire' will donate 500,000 pounds to a non-profit organisation working for the welfare of the underprivileged children of Mumbai.
The film, which earned eight Oscars along with millions as box-office revenue, depicts the struggle of Jamal, a young slumdweller of Mumbai looking for his lost love in the grim underbelly of the city.
The cast and crew including Producer Christian Colson and Director Danny Boyle have put together 500,000, which will be donated to Plan India, an organisation working for the welfare of underprivileged children in India.
"The money should allow thousands of youngsters to get an education and access to good healthcare," said the film's producer Christian Colson, in an announcement here on Thursday.
The donation will support Plan India's in a slum community in Mumbai, which focuses on early childhood care, education, water, sanitation and health. The fund is expected to help over 5,000 children of the city.
"Having benefited so much from the hospitality of the people of Mumbai, it is only right that some of theof the movie is put back into the city in areas where it is needed most and where it can make a real difference to children's lives," said director Danny Boyle.
The cast and crew of the film was followed the example of Anil Kapoor, who donated his earnings from the film to the organisation.
"Slumdog Millionaire is a film which epitomizes the positive spirit of children and the film's success is an inspiration and a way forward to improve the lives of the most vulnerable children of Mumbai," said Kapoor, who is also the goodwill ambassador of India.
