Well, it looks like we may finally be seeing that oft-rumored PlayStation phone, as rumors from Engadget say Sony Ericsson is working on a new gaming platform smartphone that will utilize Android 3.0.

As for the hardware, Engadget says:

The device is described as cross between the Samsung Captivate and the PSP Go — in other words, it’s a landscape slider with game controls in place of the typical QWERTY keyboard. The D-pad is here, but instead of the small joystick, the device will have what was described as a “long touch pad” for analog controls, along with standard PSP buttons and shoulder buttons. The phone has a large display, described as being between 3.7 and 4.1 inches with WVGA or better resolution, a 5 megapixel camera that we’re told might not be final, and it’ll likely have a 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU on board. The phone is mostly black with some silver highlights, and the gamepad area is white / silver in color.

As for the software, it should be rocking Android 3.0 or Gingerbread, which is supposed to have a host of new features and user interface improvements. The games for this Sony Ericsson gaming device are expected to be restricted to this phone and it should be able to pump out graphics that look similar to the PSP. Additionally, I’m fairly certain you’ll be able to play all the games that are in the Android Market on this device, but the control schemes might need to be tweaked.

The move could be a big boost for Sony Ericsson, as the mobile gaming market is only going to grow and Android is also gaining traction. The rumor says the device will be put under the Xperia brand but I think that would be a mistake. Call this the PlayStation Phone, release some good games and watch the money pile up.

The rumor suggests it could launch as soon as October. Are you excited yet?
