Mumbai: In the biggest political event of the year since the Lok Sabha elections, TIMES NOW set a new viewership record. As per the data released by TAM for the state elections results, TIMES NOW’s viewership beat nearest competitors NDTV 24x7 and CNN-IBN by a huge margin.
TIMES NOW recorded a 36% viewership on an all day basis, compared to 30% by cnn-ibn and a measly 25% by ndtv 24x7, which finished third. (TAM Peoplemeter System, CS M 25+AB All1 Mn+ markets, 22nd Oct'09)
The margin was even higher in the 7am to 2pm slot which was the actual time for counting, where the viewership of TIMES NOW was a whopping 41 % as compared to dwarfed numbers 31% and 18% by CNN-IB and NDTV 24x7 respectively.
On election day, TIMES NOW had the longest stretch of non stop election programming, with more than a hundred guests joining the live election analysis. The coverage was led by Editor in Chief Arnab Goswami, Political Editor Navika Kumar, Political Analyst Mahesh Rangarajan and Dileep Padgaonkar of the Times Group. The channel was also the first to put out the estimated sets projection for Maharashtra, projecting a figure for 141 for the Congress-NCP alliance at 9.15 am, which is the closest to the final figure among all news channels. TIMES NOW has had an uninterrupted run at the top throughout 2008, emerging number one in 40 out of 43 weeks of the year so far as per TAM data.
Commenting on the numbers, Arnab Goswami, Editor in Chief, TIMES NOW, said: “We’re overwhelmed and delighted. That we are number one is an accepted fact now, but to dominate to this extent shows how dramatically the audiences have moved to TIMES NOW as their natural choice for news and analysis for important and significant events”
