TRAI invites views on regulating entry of TV channels

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) Months after the government sought its opinion on regulating entry of new TV channels, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a consultation paper on it and asked stakeholders to give their opinion on the issue by early next month.

Ministry for Information and Broadcasting had on October 8, 2009 written to TRAI chairman J S Sarma, seeking his opinion on how to regulate the entry of several television channels, considering that there is limited bandwidth available for them.

In response to the ministry's request, TRAI has released a consultation paper on policy issues on uplinking/downlinking television channels in the country. It has sought comments on the consultation paper from various industry stakeholders on the issue by April 5, 2010.
