TRAI seeks industry views on 4G mobile services

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Wednesday sought views of the industry on formulating a policy framework for the introduction of fourth generation (4G) mobile services.

TRAI has said that a number of countries including Sweden, Norway, the US, Korea and Japan are moving towards 4G services and therefore India should also be prepared for introducing the technology at the earliest.

Spectrum allocation

TRAI's move comes even as the Government is yet to announce its policy for allocating spectrum for 2G and 3G services.

The regulator said that the new 4G networks will allow users to stream mobile multimedia, such as TV broadcasts and online games, with speeds up to 10 times than that of 3G networks.

High speed Internet

“Such systems provide access to a wide range of telecommunication services supported by mobile and fixed networks that are increasingly accessed using hand held devices. 4G network are designed to enable high speed Internet any time, any where.

“4G will facilitate higher bandwidth, higher data rate, lower authentication load, and support higher level of user-level customisation. It is expected to provide virtual environment agnostic to network and devices being used,” TRAI said.

Comments by March 15

TRAI has sought comments from all the stakeholders by March 15. Analysts said that Indian players could look at leapfrogging straight to 4G.

However, industry experts feel that though the move towards 4G has been kick started it will take another 2-3 years before it becomes a reality in India.
