Seeking clarification:The Minister for IT and Communications, Mr A. Raja, with the TRAI Chairman, Mr J. S. Sarma, at the national forum on mobile applications for inclusive growth and sustainable development in the Capital on Wednesday.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Wednesday said that it may seek clarification from the Government on the delay for introducing Mobile Number Portability (MNP).
“We are concerned why the delay is happening and I plan to write to the Department of Telecom soon to discuss the issues. We may also take it up with the mobile operators,” the TRAI Chairman, Mr J.S. Sarma, said on the sidelines of a seminar.
MNP allows subscribers to change their operator without having to change their phone number. It was supposed to have been introduced on January 1 but has since been postponed twice as some of the operators have not upgraded their network yet. It is now expected to be implemented by June-end.
The IT and Communications Minister, Mr A. Raja, who was also present at the seminar, said the Department of Telecom will respond to the queries of the Comptroller and Auditor on alleged irregularities linked to 2G licence given to new players in 2008.
In an internal memo, CAG has estimated that the policy followed by Mr Raja resulted in a loss of Rs 26,685 crore to the exchequer.
“The CAG is sending some queries and it will be duly responded to by the DoT in a day or two,” Mr Raja told reporters.
