TV makers, DTH operators score off IPL

The IPL wave has led to a significant jump in sales for television makers and DTH (direct-to-home) operators.

Companies such as LG and Samsung have almost doubled their sales in the past few weeks.

LG Electronics India sold over 80,000 television sets in February-March this year as against 41,267 in the corresponding period last year. In March, the company has sold till date some 43,000 units as against 21,132 units last March.

“The season looks promising. We expect to sustain our growth momentum going forward” said an LG Official.

LG recently roped in Bollywood star Akshay Kumar to promote its flat panel television product and expects to launch a new range soon.

“Our flat panel TV products have grown by 90 per cent till date since March 12,” said a Samsung spokesperson without disclosing numbers.

Flat panel TVs are fast moving products for Samsung. In 2009, the company had sold some 5 lakh television units.

The IPL season has also increased the sales of DTH operators, who expect to add some 4 lakh new subscribers in March over February this year. Cumulative subscriber addition for the industry is expected to be 10 lakh in March as against some 6 lakh in February, said Mr Salil Kapoor, chief operating officer, Dish TV.

“We expect to have our share of 20-22 per cent,” Mr Kapoor said without quantifying. Dish TV is the largest DTH operator accounting for a third of the market, estimated to be around 20 million.

“We have seen a significant jump in sales in this IPL season,” said Mr Vikram Mehra, chief marketing officer at Tata Sky. Being an unlisted company Tata Sky does not disclose its monthly growth figures, but Mr Mehra said the company subscriber base crossed the five million mark recently.

“We expect the momentum to continue mainly due to other sporting events such as the T-20 World Cup and the Fifa World Cup in the next 120 days,” Mr Mehra said.

Interestingly, Tata Sky also attributed the increased sales to the examination season. “We have seen over 50 per cent jump in sales of our Tata Sky Plus, which has a recording facility,” Mr Mehra said.

Tata Sky's research shows that parents have bought Tata Sky Plus to record the favourite programmes of their children during the examination season.

Mr Tony D'Silva, chief operating officer of Sun Direct, said IPL has not helped much to boost sales because of the exam season in South India, where the company commands a large market share. “However, IPL has helped us to create awareness about the high definition service that the company launched recently,” Mr D'Silva said.

Sun Direct has tied up with Samsung to bundle its HD set top boxes with Samsung TVs.
