Made at a whopping Rs 27-crore budget, the film has completed four weeks in Kerala.

Released in a record 130 theatres in the state, it has collected around Rs 12 crore at the BO and is the biggest success so far this year. The biopic on the ruler of a Malabar region, who led guerilla warfare with help of tribals against the British three centuries ago, the film was three years in the making and has been shot in Wayanad, Coorg and Kannur.

The film is being released in around 150 screens across Tamil Nadu, says Sarath Kumar, for whom Pazhassiraja is the first epic film and also his debut in Mollywood. "The role, being that of an army chief, a warrior, is tailor-made for me. It suits my physique. Being the story of a patriotic hero, people even outside Kerala will be able to relate to it," the actor said.

The film’s producer Praveen and executive producer of Sri Gokulam Movies told ET the non-theatrical rights of the Malayalam version of the film have been sold. While Asianet has picked up satellite rights for Rs 2.5 crore, Moser Baer has bought the home DVD rights for Rs 61 lakh. The Malayalam music rights have been picked up by Think Music, Chennai-based Satyam Cinemas’ music label. The rights for the Tamil film will be sold after the movie releases.

The producer hopes to earn profits once the movie is released in other languages. While the Tamil version will hit screens this Friday, the Telugu and Hindi versions are expected to be out early December.

The Malayalam version has also been released abroad in Dubai and the US, where it had a big opening and was house-full for a week, according to Mr Praveen. The Tamil one will be relased in Singapore and Malaysia, he added.

Remember Amitabh Bachhan’s baritone introducing Lagaan? The makers of the movie have taken a leaf out of Bollywood’s books and managed a coup of sorts, getting Kamal Hassan and Shah Rukh Khan to lend their voices for delivering the prologue voice-over in Tamil and Telugu respectively.

They roped in actor Mohan Lal for Malayalam, and are in talks with top Tollywood artistes for the Telugu version.

The film also marks Oscar winner Rasool Pookkutty debuting as the sound recordist in Mollywood. Jnanapith award winner MT Vasudevan Nair has written the script for the movie directed by T Hariharan, both getting together for a film after a gap of many years. Ilayaraja is the music director of the movie.
