Temple of bells

Tilinga Temple in Tinsukia district has the largest collection of bells in a single place thanks to the devotees who offer bells to the presiding deity, Lord Shiva.

Thousands of devotes with bells in their hands and prayers on their lips throng the Temple of Bells as it has come to be known round the year. Located in Bordubi, between Tinsukia and the oil town of Duliajan in Upper Assam, the temple has even found a mention in the Limca Book of World Records for hosting the largest collection of bells in a single place.

There is no temple structure as such, but a large banyan tree, adjacent to Monkhushi Tea Estate, with a Shiva linga at its base.

Temple priest Ashwini Kumar Pandey claims that the Shivalinga at the base of the banyan tree was spotted about 40 years ago and local devotees initially tied threads around the tree praying for their wishes to be granted.

Later, a devotee tied a brass bell to the tree praying that his wishes be fulfilled and when they were fulfilled, he returned to tie another bell as a thanksgiving to Lord Shiva, Pandey told media.

During Shivratri people flock to the temple not only from different places in the Northeast but also from other parts of the country with the district administration making special arrangements for the devotees."The place acquires a special aura during Shivratri when the bells hardly stop ringing," says Kumari Prasad, who sells offerings like flowers, incense sticks, earthern lamps and ofcourse, the bells near the temple.

It is also a wonder that not a single bell tied by devotees has gone missing. Only once a thief had stolen a few bells but before he could sell them, he faced some problems at home.

The very next day, he returned the bells to the temple and also tied an additional one seeking forgiveness of the Lord, says Pandey.
