England leapfrogged Australia to move up to third place in the ICC Test Rankings following their 3-1 series victory over South Africa. The hosts completed a 177-run victory at Old Trafford in the final Test of the series on Monday (August 7), a result that helped them gain six points to move from 99 to 105 points.

South Africa, who were unable to replicate their big success from 2012, lost seven points to slide to 110 points but retained their second place in the rankings table.

Australia, who will host England later this year for a five-match Ashes series, will remain rooted on 100 points and now occupy the fourth place until at least later this month when they tour Bangladesh for a two-Test series. England's next assignment will see them host West Indies in a three-match series starting August 17.

India remain comfortably-placed at the top of the rankings pile with 123 points with South Africa's predicament in England only serving to strengthen their advantage at the top. Virat Kohli's team, which leads the ongoing series in Sri Lanka 2-0, will lose only one ranking point if they suffer a reverse at Pallekele in the third and final Test starting Saturday (August 12) while a win there would take them up to 125 points.
