Euro 2012 Key Players: Group C
Spain- Xavi Hernandez :
If Spain emerge triumphant, they will become the first team ever to win the Euros, a World Cup, and then another Euros within three years.
In both of these previous tournament wins, central midfielder Xavi has been an integral part of the Spain side due to his passing and organization skills, which summarize the philosophy of the Barcelona academy Xavi came from.
However, with reliable goalscorer David Villa missing the tournament due to injury, Xavi may be required to chip in with more than just assists.
Italy- Andrea Pirlo:
This time last year, Andrea Pirlo had just left AC Milan to join Juventus with many people thinking that at the age of 33, he was in the twilight of his career and past his peak.
However, his spectacular performances in the 2011/12 season went a long way to helping the Turin side win the Scudetto with him chipping in with 13 assists, the most in the entire league.
If the central midfield maestro can replicate this form it could give Italy’s strikers; Giampaolo Pazzini, Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli plenty of chances, which could lead to the Italians going far in the tournament.
Croatia- Luka Modric
In many people’s estimations, Luka Modric is the heartbeat of Croatia’s team. Much like Andrea Pirlo with Italy, Modric will be expected to produce his trademark excellent passes for the Croatian strikers, namely fellow Premier League player Nikica Jelavic and former Arsenal striker Eduardo.
The dynamic central midfielder has a great deal of expectation on his hands, but if he can produce the sort of performances he did at Euro 2008, where he helped Croatia to get an unexpected quarter final place, it could allow Croatia to get out of a very tough group.
Another impressive tournament could lead to Tottenham losing the in-demand player.
Republic of Ireland- Shay Given
Being the team who are widely considered as the weakest in the group, Ireland will most likely have a lot of defending to do at Euro 2012.
However, luckily for the Irish, they have an outstanding goalkeeper in Shay Given. The 36 year-old will want to make this tournament special as due to his age it will likely be his last European championship.
The Aston Villa number one has been in the Premier League for an impressive 15 years and has faced numerous world class players. If Ireland can counter attack well, they may cause an upset and progress from their group.

Euro 2012: Torres among bounce-back stars
With Euro 2012 about to start, football fans around the world are readying themselves to catch a glimpse of the stars of tomorrow while wondering if a handful of today will regain top form and why some their favourite footballers are not even in Poland and Ukraine.
A number of Europe’s best players are not even making the trip to Eastern Europe due to injuries and other issues.
Among the biggest names are Italian attacker Guiseppe Rossi, French defender Eric Adibal and Croatian forward Ivica Olic. The defending champions Spain meanwhile are missing David Villa and Carles Puyol; and English fans will not have the chance to cheer on Jack Wilshere, Gareth Barry, Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand.
“Puyol’s is a painful absence,” Spain coach Vicente del Bosque told the UEFA website. “We all know his footballing qualities -- he has great positional sense, he’s quick, strong and has good reactions.” While most of those stars were trying to return from injuries, poor form nearly kept a series of other big names from playing in Poland and Ukraine.
The most obvious example is Spanish striker Fernando Torres, who was on top of the world after scoring the Euro 2008 title-winning goal against Germany.
Del Bosque seriously contemplated leaving “El Nino” off his squad as Torres fought to find his form since returning from injury in 2010. But Torres may just have secured his spot with the reigning champions with his stoppage-time goal in the Champions League semifinal against Barcelona for eventual champions Chelsea.
“Fernando is pretty euphoric right now,” del Bosque said.
“When you doubt your place and then, suddenly, you are involved it really reminds you about what you value and how good it is to be back with team-mates like these,” Torres told uefa.com.
Russian captain Andrey Arshavin is also hoping to recapture his form after starring at Euro 2008. The winger’s career stagnated at Arsenal and the English giants in 2011-12 sent him on loan to his former club Zenit St Petersburg.
Other players who were in subpar form of late but could take advantage of the change of scenery to the national team at Euro 2012 are Germany’s Lukas Podolski and Wesley Sneijder of the Netherlands.
Euro 2012 will, however, also serve as a coming-out party to a number of young, talented players who still are somewhat unknown in the football world.
Christian Eriksen is one of the top young players in European football as the 20-year-old has worked himself into a cornerstone for Ajax Amsterdam and the Danish national team. Eriksen has great tempo as a creative midfielder who can attack and score.
“I’ve known I’d be under pressure from the beginning. The more you play, the more focus and pressure there’ll be on you,” Eriksen said.
“I hope it stays that way. Of course, it’s been a different kind of spotlight than that which I have been under before, but it’s fine.” Greece have two youngsters who could play a key role if the 2004 champions want to advance far this summer. Both 19-year-old Kostas Fortounis, an attacking midfielder/right winger with Kaiserslautern; and 20-year-old centre back Kyriakos Papadopoulos with Schalke could be major break-out candidates.
Another star in the German Bundesliga who is expected to wow the international stage is Poland striker Robert Lewandowski, who has a tantalizing mix of scoring and playmaking ability for the tournament co-hosts.
Lewandowski’s Borussia Dortmund team-mate Mario Goetze is one of the absolute top emerging superstars in Europe and the 20-year-old midfielder will undoubtedly shine in the young German side.
Russia also have a bright hope in their ranks in CSKA Moscow playmaker Alan Dzagoev while some other players to be aware of for break-outs include French midfielder Yann M’Vila, Croatian midfielder Ivan Perisic, Czech striker Tomas Necid,Italy centre back Angelo Ogbonna and forward Mario Barotelli, Nelson Oliviera of Portugal, Ukraine’s Andriy Yarmolenko and Netherlands midfielder Kevin Strootman.
