Facebook has announced another change to its News Feed algorithm that focuses on prioritizing posts from your friends on the social network. This essentially means you will see more content from your friends than Pages you may have liked. Facebook has acknowledged that the change will cause reach and referral traffic to decline for Pages.

Facebook’s last change in algorithm had aimed to create a balance between posts from Pages and friends. Of late Facebook has been aggressively pushing publishers to embrace its Instant Articles, 360 degree videos and Live Videos in order to boost their visibility on the social networking platform. The latest update, however, is going to have a big impact on these publishers.

Since Facebook now will prioritize posts from friends and family, posts and feeds from brands and publishers will have to struggle quite a bit to make it to the top of New Feeds. So unless, a post is liked or shared by a friend, or there’s a particular posts that falls under your topic of interest, publishers might find it really difficult to get all their content to reach many people.

“The specific impact on your Page’s distribution and other metrics may vary depending on the composition of your audience. For example, if a lot of your referral traffic is the result of people sharing your content and their friends liking and commenting on it, there will be less of an impact than if the majority of your traffic comes directly through Page posts,” explains Facebook in a blog post.

Apparently, Facebook is not giving up its control over the News Feed and is still deciding content should be prioritized. Facebook has consistently changed the News Feed, ultimately impacting the experience time and again. Facebook sheds light on the latest change stating, “We learn from you and adapt over time. For example, if you tend to like photos from your sister, we’ll start putting her posts closer to the top of your feed so you won’t miss what she posted while you were away.” Whereas, people whose post you keep “hiding” would of course rank really low on your Feed.
