MS Dhoni Removed as Rising Pune Supergiants Skipper; Steve Smith to Lead

New Delhi: After stepping down as India’s limited overs skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been removed as captain of the Indian Premier League franchise Rising Pune Supergiants.
With the auction set to take place in Bengaluru on Monday, the franchise announced that Australia skipper Steve Smith will take over the reins from Dhoni.

Speaking to CricketNext, owner Sanjiv Goenka didn’t want to divulge much and said that a press release will be issued on the same. “Wait for a few minutes, we are on the verge of sending out a press release,” he said.

Dhoni had joined the new franchise last season after plying his trade for Chennai Super Kings for the first eight seasons. In fact, it was due to the suspension of CSK that Pune came into the league as there was place for two new teams after Chennai and Rajasthan Royals’s two-year suspension.

Rumours have it that the management wasn’t too happy with Dhoni’s leadership as the team failed to rise to the occasion in their first season and finished seventh even as the other newcomers, Gujarat Lions, put up a good show.

It is believed that Dhoni has been told of the management’s decision and he has made it clear that he will try and help new skipper Smith settle in.

Glenn Maxwell named Kings XI Punjab captain

Glenn Maxwell has been named captain of Kings XI Punjab for the tenth edition of the Indian Premier League, the franchise confirmed on Friday (March 10). The all-rounder will take over from M Vijay, who was named captain midway through the season last year.

Kings XI finished at the bottom of the table last season with just four wins from 14 games. David Miller started the season as the skipper but was relieved of the leadership role midway.

Maxwell played two matches for Delhi Daredevils in 2012 and then three matches for Mumbai Indians in 2013. He then joined Kings XI in the next season and enjoyed a breakthrough season with 552 runs at an average of 34.5 and a strike rate of 187.75.

His contributions were crucial in the United Arab Emirates leg of the tournament as he gave the team crucial initial wins. They made it to the final of the event before losing to Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.

However, Maxwell's form has dipped in the last two seasons with just 145 and 179 runs, in addition to just two wickets, coming from a total of 22 matches.

Kings XI will start their campaign against Rising Pune Supergiant on April 8 in Indore, their second home venue after Mohali.

JP Duminy pulls out of IPL 2017

South Africa allrounder JP Duminy has pulled out of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. The Delhi Daredevils player has cited personal reasons for his decision. Duminy, who led the team in the 2015 edition, has been a vital cog in the Daredevils set up, having scored 1015 runs for the franchise at an impressive average of 44.13 since the 2014 edition, when he was snapped up.

Duminy expressed his disappointment following his decision but hoped to play for the franchise again in the future. "It has been a very difficult decision for me to make, but it was for purely personal reasons," Duminy said on Monday (March 20).

"I'm grateful for the support and understanding from the franchise. It has been an absolute privilege to have played for and led a talented mix of players. I certainly hope to play a part for the franchise in the near future."

Daredevils, who finished sixth last season, will now be looking for a replacement, as confirmed by their chief executive Hemant Dua. "We respect JP's decision," Dua said. "We are naturally very disappointed to not have JP in our midst this year, but as a franchise we clearly understand his position. At this stage, we can only confirm that we will look for a replacement at an appropriate time."

Daredevils open their campaign with an away fixture against last year's finalists Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 8.

Virat Kohli in doubt for start of IPL

Royal Challengers Bangalore might have to start IPL 2017 without their captain Virat Kohli, as he battles against time to recover from the shoulder injury he picked up during the Australia Tests. The IPL starts on April 5, with Royal Challengers playing defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad in the tournament opener.

"It's still a few weeks to go before I can be 100% on the field," Kohli said at the end of the Dharamsala Test, when asked about his fitness. "But these things happen in your career. Got to take it in my strike and move forward."

Kohli had hurt his right shoulder during the third Test in Ranchi, when he dived in an attempt to stop a boundary. He sat out the final Test as a result.

Royal Challengers were yet to offer an official comment on Kohli's availability. Kohli has missed only one game for the franchise so far, in the inaugural season in 2008. In 2016, he scored 973 runs for RCB and could have become the first player to score 1000 runs in an IPL season.

De Villiers will lead RCB if Kohli is absent: Vettori

AB de Villiers will lead Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening stages of IPL 2017 if regular captain Virat Kohli fails to recover from his shoulder injury in time for the start of the tournament. While no timeline has been ascertained for Kohli's return, Daniel Vettori, head coach of the franchise, told reporters of the succession plan in the eventuality of the star captain missing out.

"He (Kohli) will come in on April 2. Between now and then, the BCCI doctors and physio will speak to us and our medical staff will get a clearer picture. Right now, we don't have a clear picture on his availability. We will know in the next few days," Vetorri told reporters in Bengaluru.

""The likely scenario is that AB de Villiers will take over the duties, but we'll answer that once we find out if Virat is out," Vettori added.

Kohli sustained an injury to his right shoulder while diving to save a boundary on the opening day of the Ranchi Test against Australia. The injury ruled the Indian captain out of the series decider in Dharamsala. In the aftermath of India's series victory, Kohli informed that he was still a few weeks away from regaining full fitness.

"It's still a few weeks to go before I can be 100% on the field," Kohli said at the end of the Dharamsala Test. "But these things happen in your career. Got to take it in my strike and move forward."

Kohli's absence, brief or otherwise, should it come to that, is likely to significantly hamper RCB's quest for a maiden IPL crown. The league's all-time highest run-getter (4110 runs at 38.41) has missed just one game for the franchise in the nine years of the tournament's existence. In 2016, Kohli aggregated a season record 973 runs in RCB's run to the final, where his team was pipped at the finish by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

However, Vettori was quick to back RCB's UP batsman Sarfaraz Khan and Punjab's Mandeep Singh to step up in Kohli's absence. "Fortunately, we have a number of exceptional batsmen who haven't got many playing chances, like Sarfaraz Khan and Mandeep Singh," the former New Zealand skipper said.

"It's a huge asset for us that someone else can fill in those gaps. Sarfaraz has been really good. At the back end of the domestic season he started to put some runs on the board. Everyone knows how talented he is. With possible injuries, he could get an opportunity early on in the tournament," Vettori added.

RCB will get the tenth edition of IPL underway on April 5 in a rematch of last year's final at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

The last few days have seen a literal tug-of-war between the BCCI's Committee of Administrators (CoA) and office-bearers over who should have the final say in the affairs of the board. In such a scenario, Thursday's IPL Governing Council's meeting came as a surprise as it went ahead in a cordial atmosphere, without any rancour or dissent.

Those who had to fall in line with Vinod Rai, chairman of CoA, did so without making much of a fuss. The idea is to make IPL-10 a grand success and ensure the game doesn't suffer at any cost. From signing the venue agreement to logistics and payment issues, both the CoA and office-bearers - including IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly - were on the same page. The staging associations have already been promised financial assistance to meet the expenses for hosting the games.

Shukla chaired the meeting and Rai later told TOI: "I have no issue with anyone chairing the meeting. The Governing Council exists as of now and Shukla is the chairman of the committee. He was also a part of the IPL auction in Bangalore. I am here with a purpose to implement the Lodha reforms and I don't have any difference of opinion with anyone running the sport. But if anyone comes in between our line of work, I will certainly get into the picture. That is the mandate given to us by the Supreme Court."

Shukla also agreed that the meeting went very well. "Our job is to ensure that IPL-10 gets maximum success. We have the support of Rai, who is the head of the CoA," he said.

It was revealed after the meeting that Mumbai would host the First Qualifier while the Eliminators will take place in Bangalore. For being the defending champions, Hyderabad will be the venue for the final. "Mumbai lost out on last year's IPL Play-off because of the drought issue. That is why Mumbai has been shortlisted for one of the qualifiers," Shukla said.

The board also decided to honour Indian cricket's 'Fab Five' at the opening ceremony . "Five legends of Indian cricket - Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag - will be felicitated during the opening ceremony in Hyderabad on April 5," Shukla added.

Surprisingly, India's coach Anil Kumble, whose contribution to Indian cricket is equally big, isn't part of the list.

Vijay joins lengthy IPL injury bench, Rohit declared fit

Ravichandran Ashwin has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League 2017, the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) confirmed on Saturday (April 1), while Murali Vijay and KL Rahul's participation is under the cloud. The good news, however, comes for the Mumbai Indians with Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya being declared fit.

The medical team of BCCI released an update on the fitness and availability of several star players who were under the injury cloud.

Ashwin, who reportedly played the four-Test series against Australia series despite sports hernia, and has been advised 6-8 weeks of rehabilitation, due to which he will miss the entire season. Vijay, on the other hand, requires surgery on his right wrist and will also undergo rehabilitation for his left shoulder, which could effectively rule him out of the entire season as well.

With already Virat Kohli set to miss the start of the IPL, the Royal Challengers Bangalore were in for further bad news as KL Rahul, the in-form wicketkeeper-batsman, is set to miss this edition of the tournament to undergo rehabilitation following a probable surgery on his left shoulder.

Kohli, the captain of the Bangalore-based franchise, who sustained a shoulder injury in the third of the four-Test series against Australia in Ranchi and subsequently sat out of the series decider in Dharamsala, will be assessed in the second week of April after undergoing rehabilitation and a call on his return to play will be taken then, the Indian board confirmed.

Ravindra Jadeja and Umesh Yadav have both been advised two weeks of rest to recuperate from respective ailments. While Jadeja is facing issues with the spinning finger, Umesh has right hip and lower back soreness, and the duo will miss the first two matches for their respective franchises.

The tenth edition of the tournament begins on April 5 between Sunrisers Hyderabad and RCB, with AB de Villiers likely to skipper the Bangalore side in Kohli's absence.
