Update: MIB issues six TV channel licences in Aug; Sony gets two
MUMBAI: The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting ( MIB) has issued six TV channel licences in August, including two to Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI).

All six licences are in the non-news category and are for Hindi, English and other Indian languages.

SPNI received licences under the name Le Plex HD and Sony Rox HD. Sony Le Plex HD, which was launched on 23 August, is a premium HD English movie channel.

Other companies to receive the licences are VS Broadcasting, Navda Creations, KCB Builders & Developers, and Satcom Media Broadcast. The licences are under the name VS TV, Navda, Sarthi and EV TV2 respectively.

VS Broadcasting is promoted by Vinod Kumar Sharma and Sanjeev Sharma. It has an authorised share capital of Rs 5.2 crore (Rs 52 million) and a paid-up capital of Rs 3.45 crore (Rs 34.5 million).

Navda Creations is promoted by Vivek Kumar and Prasshant Tyagee. It has an authorised share and paid-up capital of Rs 60 lakh (Rs 6 million) and Rs 52.76 lakh (Rs 5.28 million).

Satcom Media Broadcast, which is promoted by Sarad Kumar and Ram Parkash Dahiya, has an authorised share capital of Rs 5.5 crore (Rs 55 million).

The company’s paid-up capital stands at Rs 4.92 crore (Rs 49.2 million). KCB Builders & Developers has an authorised share and paid-up capital of Rs 2 crore (Rs 20 million) each. The directors of the company are Kailash Chand Bansal, Bimla Bansal and Kunal Bansal.

With the granting of the six new licences, the total number of private satellite TV channels rose to 1,041 for the month ended 31 August. The ministry also cancelled one TV channel licence, meaning the number of permitted private satellite TV channels having valid permission stands at 891 compared to 886 in July.

There are 399 news and current affairs channels and 492 non-news and current affairs channels.

In July the ministry had granted four new TV channel licences while cancelling the licences of 10 TV channels at the same time.

The ministry had granted licences to Airtravel Enterprises India, B4U Television Network and Goodnews Channel.

Airtravel had received a news uplinking licence under the name ATE TV in Malayalam and English. B4U Television Network had got non-news uplinking licences named B4U Plus and B4U Hitz in Hindi and English. Goodnews Channel had received the licence under the name Nambikkai Television in Tamil.

The ministry had cancelled 10 TV channel licences of four companies due to the denial of security clearance by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). This included Maa Television Network, STV Enterprises and Lemon Entertainment. Maa TV and STV Enterprises had four licences each while Lemon Entertainment had two licences.
