Update: Rel Jio 4G has spoilt Indian users even before launch, but we are not complaining

Reliance Jio will be launching its 4G services in the next couple of weeks if all the reports are to be believed. In the meantime though, the company has been beta testing its services and since easing the restrictions on its preview program, it has quickly amassed a user base of over 1.5 million. But let’s for a moment look beyond all the numbers and see how Jio is fast changing the way we consume data.

The tl;dr version — Jio is spoiling users with unlimited data at lightning speeds and tariff plans that are expected to be eight times cheaper than what is being offered by the likes of Airtel, and Vodafone among others. It also proves how India as a country is starved for high-speed connectivity that doesn’t burn a hole in one’s pockets.

One of the easiest ways to get hold of a Jio SIM card is to buy a LYF smartphone that is available for as low as Rs 2,999. But instead of using the smartphone as your primary driver, nearly everyone is using them as a Wi-Fi hotspot for high speed data connectivity. In fact, such is the speed on offer that many have even stopped using their broadband connectivity at home in favor of Jio.

We asked users how they were using Jio 4G, and a majority of them confirmed that they were using the smartphones as a Wi-Fi hotspot. What’s more, almost everyone has gone nuts about the speed and are consuming data like a hungry wolf let loose on a flock of sheep. Most had consumed over 20GB of data in about a week or so and were showing no signs of slowing down. A couple of users had crossed 100GB of data in just 10 days, while one had even touched nearly 300GB in just 20 days. These numbers are way above Reliance’s claims of users consuming an average of 26GB data every month.

See Here, users response..!!

At last count, there were over 343 million internet users in India, but a majority of them don’t know what high-speed connectivity really is. Only a handful of them who can afford it can really boast about the speeds they get. With Reliance Jio, more people will be able to easily access high-speed connectivity at reasonable rates. Though the speeds on offer will surely go down when the services are commercially launched, they are still expected to be better than what is on offer by existing network operators.

It’s not just Reliance Jio, but Google and RailTel’s free Wi-Fi services at railway stations is another example of how users are ready to go to any lengths to access a reliable and high-speed internet connection. Since its launch at Mumbai Central, Google’s free Wi-Fi services are available at 23 railway stations, and the company says over two million users have benefited from them. The tweet embedded below perfectly describes how the likes of Jio and Google are spoiling us — and that’s not necessarily a bad thing!
