5 smartphones priced under Rs 10,000 that support Face Unlock: Xiaomi Redmi Y2, Oppo Realme 1 and more

The Apple iPhone X was one of the first smartphones to use a Face Unlock feature. However, in the last one-year we’ve seen a lot of Android smartphones come with that feature as well. While none of them carry the same 3D technology Apple uses on its iPhone X, the feature still works well and provides a faster and secure way to unlock the smartphone.

As front cameras on smartphones are getting better and more equipped with AI technology, we’re seeing the face unlock feature become a common offering among smartphones cross price categories. In fact, today it is possible to get the security of face unlock on smartphones priced under Rs 10,000. Here is a quick list of top five smartphones that we recommend out of them.


Xiaomi Redmi Note 5

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 comes with an impressive set of hardware underneath it’s metal chassis. But perhaps its most important feature is the front facing 5-megapixel camera. It comes with face recognition technology and face unlock feature. Besides that, it also takes good selfies and is backed by a front facing flash as well. Redmi Note 5 is also a great overall performer in this category.


Xiaomi Redmi Redmi Y2

There was no doubt that the Xiaomi Redmi Y2 wasn’t going to make this list given its selfie centric lineage. The phone was launched recently in India at a price of Rs 9,999. It comes with a 16-megapixel front camera powered with AI. This allows the Redmi Y2 to not only click stunning selfies but also offer a no-delay face unlock feature. The range of AI features also includes AI portrait and AI Beautification modes.


Oppo Realme 1

Oppo launched the Realme 1 recently in order to appeal better to the younger audience.  The phone focuses on two areas more than anything. The first being design and the other being front camera. Oppo Realme 1 comes with an 8-megapixel AI camera that also offers a quick and reliable face unlock feature. In order to, maintain the diamond back look though, Oppo has ditched the fingerprint sensor.


Honor 7C

Priced at Rs 9,999 the Honor 7C comes with an 8-megapixel front camera supported by AI beautification feature. Besides that, it can also track multiple facial features to give you quick access to your phone. The Honor 7C also comes with a dual-rear camera setup and a tall 18:9 FullVIew display.


Honor 7A

Honor 7A offers a premium build wrapped around a 5.7-inch FullView display. Like the Honor 7C, the phone also comes with an 8-megapixel AI selfie camera, which features quick face unlock. Apart from that, the camera is also backed by a selfie toning light which ensures clear selfies in different lighting situations. The phone is priced at Rs 8,999.

It has an all-metal design, a fairly capable dual camera setup at the rear, face unlock and a crisp and vibrant 5.99-inch display that flows from edge to edge.



In traditional Xiaomi fashion, the Redmi Note 5 Pro has extremely impressive specifications for the price. It is powered by the Snapdragon 636 processor clocked at 1.8GHz paired with the Adreno 509 GPU and a 4000mAh battery. At Rs. 13,999, the 4GB RAM variant of the Note 5 Pro offers great value for money. There is a 6GB RAM variant as well but it is priced beyond the ambit of this article - at Rs. 16,999.

Moto G5S Plus

The Moto G5S Plus (Review) is one of the most well-rounded smartphones in this price bracket. It has excellent build quality, a fast and fluid build of Android devoid of unnecessary bloat, an all-metal design, capable internals and a crisp and vibrant 5.5-inch display.



While the secondary sensor cannot compare to the likes of the Xiaomi Mi A1, the primary rear camera on the Moto G5S Plus is one of the best in its class. It is available in only one variant, with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage (which can be expanded via a microSD card) for Rs. 12,999.

BlackBerry KEY2 vs BlackBerry KEYone: Price, Specifications, Features Compared

BlackBerry KEY2 was launched last week as the successor to the BlackBerry KEYone. BlackBerry licensee TCL has made it clear that it still wants to make smartphones that run on the Android operating system, paired with BlackBerry's security features and the physical keyboard. The KEY2 is the first BlackBerry-branded smartphone to sport a dual camera setup. It has introduced features such as portrait mode and optical zoom. Additionally, its physical QWERTY keyboard now comes with some intelligent shortcuts helping users launch apps and activate commands with the press of a single key. Also, the new smartphone offers a Series 7 aluminium alloy frame, a textured diamond grip back panel, and a claimed two-day battery life.

A quick look at both the BlackBerry KEY2 and KEYone, and it is amply clear that they are BlackBerry handsets, especially because of the iconic QWERTY keyboards. Since BlackBerry does not appear to make fullscreen handsets, and wants to lure in its fans who expect a secure phone with a full QWERTY keyboard, the KEY2 doesn't compete with the likes of Apple iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy S9. As a result, the right smartphone to compare the KEY2 would be to the previous model - BlackBerry KEYone. We take a look at the price, specifications, features of the KEY2 and compare it with the 2017 variant.

BlackBerry KEY2 vs BlackBerry KEYone price
BlackBerry KEY2 price has been set at $649 (roughly Rs. 43,800), EUR 649 (roughly Rs. 51,700), GBP 579 (roughly Rs. 52,600), and CAD 829 (roughly Rs. 43,100) and will start shipping globally sometime later this month. It will be made available in Black and Grey colour options. Considering its predecessor, the BlackBerry KEYone, was launched in India, we can expect the KEY2 also to arrive in the country sometime later this year.

When BlackBerry launched the KEYOne, it was priced at $549 (roughly Rs. 38,600) in the US, GBP 499 (roughly Rs. 41,400) in the UK, and EUR 599 (roughly Rs. 42,100) in Europe. Later the BlackBerry KEYone was launched in India as an Amazon-exclusive handset, in partnership with manufacturing and distribution partner Optiemus Infracom, and the smartphone's price in India was set at Rs. 39,990.

The dual-SIM (Nano) BlackBerry KEY2 runs Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box, and sports a 4.5-inch full-HD (1080x1620 pixels) IPS LCD display with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass, a 3:2 aspect ratio, a pixel density of 433ppi, and 24-bit colour depth. The handset is powered by a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC (four Kryo 260 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four clocked at 1.8GHz), combined with 6GB of RAM.

As for camera specifications, the BlackBerry KEY2 sports a horizontal dual camera setup with two 12-megapixel rear sensors that include Dual Tone LED flash, HDR, 4K video recording at 30FPS, and dual PDAF. The primary sensor has a FoV (Field of View) of 79.3 degrees, 1.28 micron pixels, and an f/1.8 aperture, while the secondary sensor has a 50-degree FoV, 1.0 micron pixels, and f/2.6 aperture. On the front, the smartphone gets an 8-megapixel fixed focus with screen flash and full-HD video recording.

The smartphone comes in 64GB and 128GB internal storage variants, expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB). Connectivity options on the BlackBerry KEY2 include 4G LTE (on both SIM cards), Wi-Fi 802.11ac (dual-band 2.4GHz, 5GHz), Bluetooth v5.0 LE, GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, NFC, FM radio, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and USB Type-C. A 3500mAh battery powers in the internals from underneath the hood, with Quick Charge 3.0 support. Sensors onboard the handset include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyroscope, hall effect sensor, fingerprint sensor (on spacebar key), magnetometer, and proximity sensor. Dimensions of the BlackBerry KEY2 are 151.4x71.8x8.5mm and weight is 168 grams.

DTEK by BlackBerry app now includes the new Proactive Health check feature. It also has the enhanced Convenience Key, making it easier to access your most-used apps with custom profiles for at home, in the car, in a meeting or on the go.

The BlackBerry KEYone specifications were quite mediocre. The dual-SIM BlackBerry KEYone arrived with Android 7.1.1 Nougat, and a 4.5-inch IPS LCD display with a 3:2 aspect ratio (1080x1620 pixels) and a pixel density of 433ppi. It was powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC clocked at up to 2GHz, coupled with 4GB of RAM.

Interestingly, BlackBerry had made some changes to the specifications of the smartphone for India. The KEYone was launched in a 4GB RAM + 64GB inbuilt storage configuration, compared to the 3GB RAM + 32GB inbuilt storage configuration that was launched in international markets. The company called the model the BlackBerry KEYone Limited Edition Black. Also, the Indian model supported dual-SIM cards.

In terms of optics, the KEYone camera setup had a 12-megapixel rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, EIS, and dual-tone LED flash, apart from the 8-megapixel front camera that had an f/2.2 aperture and an 84-degree wide-angle lens. As for storage, the BlackBerry KEYone came with 64GB of inbuilt storage, expandable via microSD card (up to 2TB) in a hybrid dual-SIM configuration.

Connectivity options in the BlackBerry KEYone included 4G VoLTE, dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) Wi-Fi 802.11ac, NFC, GPS/ A-GPS, Bluetooth v4.2, FM radio, USB Type-C (3.1), and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Sensors on board the smartphone included accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, and a proximity sensor. It was powered by a 3505mAh non-removable battery that supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, said to charge the smartphone from zero to 50 percent in just 30 minutes. It measured 149.3x72.5x9.4mm, and weighed 180 grams.

The BlackBerry KEYone shipped with preloaded security apps such as DTEK by BlackBerry and BlackBerry Password Keeper, while productivity apps such as BlackBerry Hub, BlackBerry Calendar, BlackBerry Productivity Edge, and BlackBerry Workspaces were also on board. The Smart Keyboard functionality offered contextual auto-correction, next-word prediction, and 'flick typing' that adapted to the user's language style.

Xiaomi Redmi Y2 - Review

Some people are obsessed with selfies and phone manufacturers have taken notice. The result is smartphones dedicated to selfies. We have seen manufacturers like Oppo claiming to be the "Selfie Expert", while others have specific selfie-focused models. One such manufacturer is Xiaomi, which launched the Redmi Y1 (Review) and the Redmi Y1 Lite last year.

To keep up with the times, Xiaomi has created a successor to it called the Redmi Y2. With improved internals, is the Redmi Y2 the smartphone to buy for good selfies on a budget? We find out

Xiaomi Redmi Y2 design
Take a look at the Redmi Y2 and you will see that the design has evolved. It looks a lot like the Redmi S2, which the company recently launched in the Chinese market. It has a 5.99-inch display and a Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro (Review)-like camera module at the back. The Redmi Y2 is primarily made of plastic, unlike the Redmi Note series which uses metal in its construction. The Redmi Y2 is tall and narrow thanks to the 18:9 aspect ratio.

The display has rounded corners, just like other recent Xiaomi phones. Above the display is a recessed metal earpiece, a selfie camera, and a selfie light. This phone is comfortable to hold thanks to its curved sides and rounded edges. However, it isn't easy to reach the top of the display without shuffling the phone in your hand.

Button placement on the Redmi Y2 is good, and it is easy to click the power and the volume buttons that are positioned on the right. The phone has a Micro-USB port at the bottom with grilles on either side, but only the right one houses a loudspeaker. The 3.5mm headphone jack, an IR emitter, and a secondary microphone are on the top.

Turn the phone around and you will see a dual camera setup and a fingerprint scanner that is conveniently placed. Xiaomi has also opted for antenna lines that run along the top and the bottom of the phone.

The Redmi Y2 weighs 170g and measures 8.1mm in thickness. It has a 3080mAh non-removable battery that Xiaomi claims can deliver all-day battery life. The phone does ship with a 10W charger in the box but there is no mention of quick charging support. Like other Xiaomi smartphones, the retail box for the Redmi Y2 only contains the phone, charger, Micro-USB cable, and a case.

Xiaomi is known to offer good hardware with most of its smartphones and the Redmi Y2 isn't an exception. The Redmi Y2 is powered by the Snapdragon 625 SoC, which is an octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz. There are two variants of the phone, one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, and the other with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It has a dedicated microSD card slot and you can use a card of up to 256GB capacity.

The 5.99-inch display sports an HD+ resolution of 720x1440 pixels and an 18:9 aspect ratio, which is a marginal upgrade over the Redmi Y1. The display has decent viewing angles and a neutral colour output, but you do have the option to tweak that as per your preference. The screen is slightly reflective and isn't clearly legible when outdoors. The Redmi Y2 is a dual-SIM device with two Nano-SIM slots, and has a non-removable 3080mAh battery. There is support for WiFi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, GPS, 4G, and VoLTE.

The dual camera setup on the back of Redmi Y2 consists of a 12-megapixel primary camera and a 5-megapixel secondary camera. Xiaomi has gone with a 16-megapixel selfie camera along with a selfie light, which should help it capture better photos in poorly lit environments.

MIUI 9.5 is Xiaomi's custom UI running on the Redmi Y2 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo, and our unit had received the May 2018 security patch. It has all of Xiaomi's UI customisations such as Second Space, Dual Apps, and theme support, which we have seen on older devices. You can swipe right from the homescreen to access quick shortcuts and other widgets.

The company has made a few tweaks to the navigation buttons and you now have the option to ditch them and use gesture navigation. Once enabled, you can swipe up from the bottom of the screen and release to go to the home screen, or pause to open the app switcher. An inward swipe from the lower left or right edge of the screen is required to go back.

Following the current trend, Xiaomi has added face reognition as one of the methods to unlock the phone. The setup process seems very basic and it did not ask us to look to the right or left in order to capture multiple angles. In fact, a message appeared while setting up Face Unlock, stating that the device can potentially be unlocked by other people using a photo of you. After setting it up, we did use it to unlock the phone and found it to be slower and not as accurate as other manufacturers' implementations. Looking at this performance and the time it takes to unlock the phone, we would recommend that you stick to the fingerprint sensor.

Xiaomi has installed a few apps in addition to the usual set of Mi Apps that we are now used to. You get a few Google apps preinstalled, along with Facebook, Amazon, PhonePe, Netflix, and NewsPoint. While storage isn't a major constraint as you get close to 22GB of free space with the 32GB variant, you can still go ahead and uninstall most of these apps.

Xiaomi Redmi Y2 performance, cameras, and battery life
The Snapdragon 625 SoC is a tried and tested processor and has been around for a while, even powering some of Xiaomi's previous models. It is still capable of delivering a good lag-free experience, and we did not notice any stutter during usage. It manages multitasking quite well, and we found that the phone did keep apps in the background, making it easy for us to switch between them.

We had the 3GB RAM variant in for review, which delivered decent results when we benchmarked it. In AnTuTu, it managed to score 77,089, and also 823 and 3982 in Geekbench's single-core and multi-core tests respectively. It scored 851 in 3DMark Slingshot, and 35fps in GFXBench T-Rex. These scores are quite similar to those of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, except for marginally better performance in graphics benchmarks owing to the lower-resolution display.

Battery performance depends hugely on what you are doing with the Redmi Y2. With our light usage restricted to social media apps like Facebook and WhatsApp, coupled with a few calls, this phone managed to get through one day without needing to be plugged it. Bump the usage up to include games, and you will see that the battery level drops quicker. While playing games like Clash Royale we saw a high rate of battery drain. On the other hand, our HD video loop test ran for 14 hours and 46 minutes. When you run out of power, the supplied 10W charger takes close to two hours to top the phone up completely.

Xiaomi's camera app is fairly straightforward and easy to use. You get a few quick toggles for HDR and the flash, and an option to apply filters to your photos. Other camera modes include Short Video which lets you record 10-second clips, the usual video mode, Portrait mode, and a Manual mode that only lets you control the white balance and ISO. Panorama mode only lets you take photos while holding the phone in portrait.

We noticed a slight shutter lag which became more of an issue in low light. When you switch to the selfie camera you do get to choose the level of beautification you like, and there's an advanced mode that gives you control over specific parameters such as the eyes, jawline, skin tone, and skin smoothening. Xiaomi says that it uses AI to apply beautification to photo subjects.

Selfies are the highlight of the Redmi Y2, and it does a good job here. It can recognise more than one face and apply the necessary beautification enhancements. We saw that the phone tended to slightly overexpose shots taken outdoors. In dim environments, the selfie light springs into action to let you get a better shot. Since it is diffused, it doesn't hurt the eyes.

Photos taken with the rear camera were decent in daylight, and we were satisfied with the output it delivered. Landscape shots had a good amount of detail, and the Y2 managed to capture colours rather well. With macros, you'll need to put in a little work to get the camera to focus where you want. Once it locks focus, this phone does a good job, and shots do appear sharp.

We tried the portrait mode which uses the secondary camera to simulate a depth-of-field effect. Switching to portrait mode results in a bit of cropping with the primary sensor. The live view for portrait mode is a little slow to show previews of the effect, and the phone takes some time to process a portrait shot. The results depend on the distance between the subject and background, and any object near the subject will cause issues with edge detection. When the scene is relatively simple, the Y2 does manage to deliver a good usable result.

Low-light shots need a steady hand, as the camera reduces its shutter speed to capture more light. We noticed that it also loses out on details in landscape shots resulting in a patchy effect when zooming in on a few of our samples. Video recording maxes out at 1080p for the rear camera, and EIS does help you capture fairly steady footage.

Verdict
The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 is a slightly better attempt at a selfie-focused smartphone than the model it replaces. It has proven hardware that is capable of delivering a smooth user experience, plus MIUI 9.5 which has a lot of added features. The camera performance is good in daylight but goes down a little in low light. Selfies are the highlight of this smartphone and it does deliver on that front, with good shots in various lighting conditions.

For its asking price, the Redmi Y2 could be a good choice if you prioritise selfies over everything else. If you want a better all-rounder, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (Review) has a full HD+ display, a bigger 4000mAh battery, and sells at same price. Another alternative is the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 (Review), which costs a little extra but also delivers more in terms of specifications.

Nokia 6 (2018) 4GB Review

HMD Global recently released the Nokia 6 (2018) (Review) in India in a bid to take on the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro (Review). The phone launched in India in just one variant, with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Now, the Finnish company has launched a second variant, with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, priced at Rs. 18,999.

We were impressed with the clean and fluid software package, build quality, performance, and battery life of the Nokia 6 (2018). But the low-light camera performance and mediocre fingerprint sensor were hard to ignore. We are eager to examine if the extra gigabyte of RAM has any real-world effect on performance and if it's worth shelling out an extra 2,000 rupees.

Nokia 6 (2018) 4GB design
We won't spend too much rehashing the Nokia 6 (2018)'s design, as it has not changed since we last examined it in detail. It is worth reiterating that the smartphone is built like a tank and feels incredibly solid in the hand. HMD Global told Gadgets 360 that build quality was its biggest priority while designing the second generation Nokia 6 and the end result speaks for itself.

The smartphone is a bit too wide, which hampers one-handed use considerably. The sizeable borders around the display also look a bit dated. On a positive note, the accents around the buttons, rear camera and frame look classy and add design flair to what is otherwise a staid, industrial design.

The layout is the same as the 3GB variant of the phone. There is a hybrid dual-SIM tray on the left edge, a power button and volume rocker on the right edge and a 3.5mm headphone socket on the top. The USB-Type C port is present on the bottom along with a loudspeaker, which is rather shrill and tinny. The Nokia 6 (2018) is one of the few smartphones below Rs. 20,000 to abandon the age-old micro-USB port.

This variant of the Nokia 6 (2018) comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor clocked at 2.2GHz, which is a huge improvement over the under-powered Snapdragon 430 found in last year's Nokia 6. As we noted in our earlier review, the 5.5-inch LCD panel is bright and punchy but suffers from poor viewing angles.

Apart from the extra helping of RAM and additional storage, the new variant of the Nokia 6 (2018) is identical to the one we reviewed a few weeks ago. A few software improvements have helped the camera performance somewhat, which we will talk about in detail below. You can read about the rest of the specifications in our review of the 3GB RAM variant.

Nokia 6 (2018) 4GB performance, software, and battery life
When HMD Global resurrected Nokia mobile from the dead, it decided to equip all of its smartphones with stock Android in a bid to differentiate them from the crowd. Pure, secure, and up to date was the company's motto and it has more or less delivered on their promise of timely updates. Fast forward a year later and the company has now embraced Android One, which hopefully means even more frequent software updates.

The Nokia 6 (2018) runs Android 8.1 Oreo devoid of any overlays or third-party bloat. It is Android as Google intended it to be. There are a few non-intrusive value additions, such as 'Ambient Display' which shows notifications for missed calls, alarms, and notifications without waking the phone from sleep, and a couple of motion-triggered gestures like mute on pickup and lift to check phone. You can also swipe the fingerprint sensor to pull down the notification tray which is quite nifty. HMD Global has promised updates to Android P as well as Android Q, as and when they are released.

Thanks in part to the clean and fluid software package, we were quite impressed with the performance of the 3GB RAM variant of the Nokia 6 (2018). Does the extra gigabyte of RAM have any substantial effect on performance? That's the money question.

Truth to be told, we didn't find any major differences between the new and older variants of the Nokia 6 (2018) in terms of day to day performance. We faced no issues with multi-tasking and playing heavy games in the 3GB variant and the experience was much the same here. That said, games like Asphalt 8 did exhibit slightly faster loading times and we always had close to 50 per cent free RAM.

Apart from the multi-core test in Geekbench, which saw an increase of 15 percent, benchmark results were more or less the same. There was no discernible difference in battery life either. Just like the 3GB variant of the Nokia 6 (2018), this one lasted us an entire day of medium to intensive use with juice left for more. In our HD video loop test, the phone lasted 11 hours and 30 minutes, just 10 minutes less than the 3GB variant. A fast charger is bundled in the box which took the Nokia 6 (2018) from an empty tank to 42 percent in 30 minutes.

As we noted in our earlier review, the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor is slow, inaccurate, and awkwardly placed and face recognition works well only when lighting conditions are favourable.

Nokia 6 (2018) 4GB cameras
On the imaging front, the Nokia 6 (2018) has a single 16-megapixel rear camera with a dual LED flash and an aperture of f/2.0, and a single 8-megapixel fixed-focus front camera with the same f/2.0 aperture. We were not overly impressed with the rear camera when we first tested the Nokia 6 (2018). Even though it performed admirably in adequate light, shots taken after dark had a fair bit of noise and lacked detail. Autofocus was also inaccurate and the camera app struggled with white balance in auto mode.

While low-light performance is still disappointing and auto-focus leaves a lot to be desired, the white balance issue has been mitigated considerably. We are pleased to report the phone no longer has trouble rendering colours accurately in auto mode. These improvements are not exclusive to this variant and have also made their way to the cheaper variant of the Nokia 6 (2018).

The professional mode still works well, and allows you tweak the ISO, shutter speed, exposure and white balance with a swipe of the thumb. There is a bokeh mode on offer as well, which works only with the front camera and is facilitated via software algorithms. The resulting shots are nothing to write home about, with the edge detection being rather poor.

The front camera does a good job in favourable lighting but struggles when light is inadequate. A front facing LED flash is conspicuous by its absence and the screen flash does not really help matters much. "Bothie" mode also makes a return. While the ability to take photos/ videos with the front and rear camera at the same time is pretty nifty, the quality of both cameras decreases noticeably in this mode.

Video capture maxes out at 4K for the rear camera and 1080p for the front camera. The resultant videos have a good amount of detail but the onboard EIS is rather poor.

Verdict
The 4GB RAM variant of the Nokia 6 (2018) is hard to recommend. The performance gains are incremental at best and are hard to notice in day-to-day use. Apart from the bump in internal storage, there is no compelling reason to spend more on the higher-end variant of the Nokia 6 (2018).

If the Nokia 6 (2018)'s stellar build quality, clean software package, good battery life and solid performance appeal to you, the variant with 3GB of RAM, which is priced at Rs. 16,999, is the one to buy. Potential buyers should also take a look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro (Review) and Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 (Review), which cost less and offer a better set of cameras.

Redmi Note 5 Pro vs Moto G6 vs Oppo Realme 1: Which One Should You Buy?

Smartphones with 18:9 displays are becoming ubiquitous and now Motorola has embraced this trend with the sixth generation of the budget-minded G series. The company recently launched the Moto G6 (Review) and Moto G6 Play in India. The Moto G6 starts at Rs. 13,999 and comes with a glass and metal design, a dual camera setup at the rear, and near stock Android. With that launch, competition market of smartphones around Rs. 15,000 has heated up considerably. The Moto G6 faces tough competition from the likes of the Oppo Realme 1 (Review), which offers tremendous value for money, and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro (Review), which has established itself as the segment benchmark. We spent some time with the three smartphones, comparing them in detail, and here is everything that we learnt.


Redmi Note 5 Pro vs Moto G6 vs Oppo Realme 1 design

While the Redmi Note 5 Pro has a metal backplate, the Moto G6 has a sleek and shiny curved glass back which helps it stand out from the crowd. Not only does the Moto G6 look the most premium of the three, it is extremely compact and easy to hold in one hand thanks to the manageable width and rounded edges.

On the flip-side, the glass back is a fingerprint magnet and makes the Moto G6 very slippery. The Realme 1's back panel is made of fibreglass and has a distinctive glossy diamond-cut effect on the back. The design is slightly polarising and might come as gaudy to some. All three phones are built well, but it is the Redmi Note 5 Pro that feels the most solid and substantial.

While the Redmi Note 5 Pro and Moto G6 have a significant camera bump, the camera module on the Realme 1 barely protrudes from the chassis. The Moto G6 is the only smartphone with a USB Type-C port. The Realme 1 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in comparison use the age-old Micro-USB port for charging and data transfers.

The Realme 1 is powered by the Helio P60 chipset, which is MediaTek's flagship processor and features NeuroPilot AI technology which can handle deep learning for facial detection as well as photo and video enhancement. The Redmi Note 5 Pro and Moto G6 in comparison are powered by the Snapdragon 636 SoC and Snapdragon 450 processor respectively.

Both the Moto G6 and Redmi Note 5 Pro are offered in two variants, while the Realme 1 straddles multiple price categories with three variants on offer. The base variant of the Moto G6 retails for Rs. 13,999 and has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, and the one we tested here is priced at Rs. 15,999 and has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

There are three variants of the Realme 1 on offer - one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage priced at Rs. 8,990; one with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage priced at Rs. 10,990; and the variant we've reviewed here with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage priced at Rs. 13,999.

We used the base variant of the Redmi Note 5 Pro, which is priced at Rs. 14,999 and has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There is another variant of the smartphone on offer which is priced at Rs. 16,999 and features 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. All three phones allow for storage expansion via a microSD card.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro has a sizeable 4,000mAh battery, the Realme 1 has a 3,410mAh battery, and the Moto G6 makes do with a 3,000mAh unit. Connectivity options on all three phones include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, GPS/ A-GPS, and a 3.5mm headphone jack which is fast becoming extinct in smartphones. All three allow you to use two 4G SIMs at the same time, but only one runs at 4G speeds.

All three smartphones feature tall 18:9 IPS LCD displays which are not exactly borderless and have a resolution of1080x2160 (full-HD+). The Realme 1's 6-inch display is decent but a cut below the one found on the other two. Colours are vibrant (if not entirely accurate) but viewing angles are disappointing and so is sunlight legibility.

The panels on the Redmi Note 5 Pro and Moto G6 have their set of pros and cons. The 5.99-inch display on the Redmi Note 5 Pro is easy to view in direct sunlight and has great viewing angles but seems a bit dull and washed out. The Moto G6's 5.7-inch panel in comparison renders colours accurately but is not bright enough for outdoor use.

Redmi Note 5 Pro vs Moto G6 vs Oppo Realme 1 performance, software, and battery life

All three smartphones are fairly capable of handling day-to-day use, but the Moto G6, thanks to the low-end Snapdragon 450 SoC under the hood, exhibits slight lag and stutter while handling intensive workloads. The Moto G6 also becomes very warm when pushed, a problem not faced with the other two.

There is very little to choose between the smartphones when it comes to gaming. We did experience lag while loading heavy games like Asphalt 8 on the Moto G6, but gameplay was smooth across all three.

While precise and accurate, the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor on Xiaomi's smartphone is a bit slow compared to the one on the Moto G6. The pill-shaped sensor on the Moto G6, which is present below the display, is very small but is extremely fast and accurate. A fingerprint sensor is conspicuous by its absence on the Realme1, which relies on on facial recognition, plus the usual passcode options, for security.

All three smartphones use the front facing camera for facial recognition, which comes with the usual caveats such as poor performance in low-light and less than stellar security. The Moto G6's face recognition is the worst of the bunch and is very iffy and inaccurate.

The Moto G6 runs a near stock version of Android 8.0 Oreo with Motorola's traditional gestures such as chop to turn on the flashlight and double-twist to launch the camera app. The Realme 1 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in comparison run a heavily skinned version of Android. The Realme 1 runs Oppo's highly modified Color OS 5.0 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo. While the interface is fluid and snappy, it is extremely cluttered and in dire need of simplification. There is no app drawer and the Settings app and quick launch panel are quite hard to navigate around.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro runs MIUI 9.2 atop Android 7.1.2. While an update to Oreo is on the way, it is disappointing to see Android Nougat on a smartphone being sold in June 2018. MIUI has come a long way and in its current iteration, is a smooth and feature packed OS. That said, it is riddled with bloat and is still not as clean and fluid as stock Android.

While all three phones easily lasted through a full day of moderate to intensive use, it was the Redmi Note 5 Pro that had a little more juice left at the end of the day. In our HD video loop battery test, the Realme 1 lasted 11 hours and 30 minutes and the Redmi Note 5 Pro lasted an incredible 16 hours and 36 minutes. The Moto G6 posted a disappointing score of 8 hours and 40 minutes but real-world performance was satisfactory.

The Moto G6 ships with a 15W Turbo Charger which can charge the phone fully in less than 1.5 hours. Both the Realme 1 and Redmi Note 5 pro do not ship with a quick charger but the latter atleast supports quick charging.

Redmi Note 5 Pro vs Moto G6 vs Oppo Realme 1 cameras

In our experience, photos taken with the Redmi Note 5 Pro in less than stellar light were mediocre at best. The smartphone managed to extract a decent amount of detail in low-light but images were over-exposed and colour accuracy was iffy.

The Moto G6 has a tendency to over-sharpen images at night in order to reduce noise. That said, the Moto G6 takes in the most amount of light and captures decent detail. The Realme 1 captures colours better than the rest but suffers from a lack of detail.

Images taken with the Redmi Note 5 Pro in adequate light were a cut above the other two. Pictures were sharp and crisp and the phone managed to capture the most amount of detail. The Moto G6 in comparison tended to over-expose images and images taken with the Realme 1 were soft and lacking in detail.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro and Moto G6 have a secondary sensor at the back that allows for the capture of images with depth of field effects. Bokeh shots taken on both smartphones were above average, but the Redmi Note 5 Pro had better edge detection and delivered smoother gradients between a subject and its background.

The Moto G6 has the best selfie camera of the bunch. It takes detailed shots during the day and captures the most usable shots in low-light. The Realme 1 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in comparison capture grainy and noisy images in inadequate light. Videos taken with all three smartphones are nothing to write home about, with the Redmi Note 5 Pro having a slight edge in terms of stabilisation and detail.

Redmi Note 5 Pro vs Moto G6 vs Oppo Realme 1: Which one should you buy?

The Redmi Note 5 Pro (Review) is undoubtedly the most well-rounded smartphone of the bunch. It looks good, is built well, and performs admirably. The battery life is also stellar making it the best option for road warriors.

The Moto G6 (Review) is gorgeous and compact but does not have the performance to match its looks. That said, it has the best front camera out of the three and is a great option for selfie lovers. Those looking for the best rear camera should stick to the Redmi Note 5 Pro, which struggles slightly in low light but delivers the most detailed images when lighting conditions are favorable.

While the lower variants of the Realme 1 offer tremendous value for money, the variant with 6GB of RAM is hard to recommend given the phone's lack of a fingerprint sensor and cluttered and confusing UI.

HTC Desire 12+ Review

HTC was one of the first to enter the smartphone race, but this Taiwanese company has not had it easy over the years. Recently, part of the company - including some of its top engineers - was acquired by Google to work on its Pixel smartphones. Even after this transition, we are seeing good devices such as the HTC U11+ (Review). HTC has now launched a mid-range smartphone called the Desire 12+ in India, priced at Rs. 19,790. It follows the ongoing trend of 18:9 displays and has dual rear cameras. Does it have the overall performance to justify its price tag? We find out.


HTC Desire 12+ design
Take a look at the Desire 12+ and you know it's an HTC smartphone, since it carries the family look. The design is simple and in line with what you would expect from most smartphones nowadays. HTC says that it has an acrylic glass back surface, but it feels quite plasticky to the touch. This is a little surprising since many phones in this price range use more premium materials such as glass and metal. The back does pick up smudges easily and you will need to wipe it often to keep it clean. During our review period, we also saw it picking up fine scratches.

The Desire 12+ sports a 6-inch display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, making the phone tall and narrow. It has a metallic earpiece, selfie camera, and notification LED above the display. The phone isn't too thick and is comfortable to hold in the hand. It weighs 157g and is 8.4mm in thickness. The buttons are positioned on the right, but higher than where we would like them. HTC has two colour options for the Desire 12+ in India: Warm Silver and Cool Black. We got the Cool Black version for review, and it looks more blue than black depending on the light.

This phone has a dual camera setup at the back, placed horizontally, along with a single-LED flash and a fingerprint sensor. The Desire 12+ has a Micro-USB port at the bottom along with a 3.5mm headphone socket and a loudspeaker. The left side of the phone has the SIM tray which has dual Nano-SIM slots and a dedicated microSD card slot.

HTC Desire 12+ specifications, software, and features
The HTC Desire 12+ is a bit of a disappointment when you look at the spec sheet. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC clocked at 1.8GHz. This is the same octa-core processor found in the Xiaomi Redmi 5 (Review) which costs half as much as this phone. We would have liked a Snapdragon 600-series processor at this price level. The 6-inch HD+ display on the Desire 12+ is also surprising considering that most phones even at lower prices offer full-HD+. Viewing angles are decent on the phone and it gets bright enough to be viewable under sunlight. HTC gives you the option to tweak the colour temperature of the display.

There is 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, of which you get 23GB for your data. You can expand storage by using the microSD card slot, and this phone can handle cards of up to 2TB. The dual camera setup on the back consists of a 13-megapixel primary sensor with PDAF and an f/2.2 aperture, along with a 2-megapixel depth sensor. There is an 8-megapixel selfie camera with a selfie light as well. Powering the phone is a 2965mAh battery, and you get a standard 5V, 1.5A charger in the box.

Connectivity options on the HTC Desire 12+ include Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS, and GLONASS. It is a dual-SIM device with support for 4G and VoLTE, but we found that either SIM can use 4G at a time but the other one will be restricted to 2G and 3G only.

In terms of software, the Desire 12+ runs on HTC's Sense UI on top of Android 8.0 Oreo. Swipe right from the home screen and you are greeted by BlinkFeed, which displays the latest news based on the sources you choose. You can also add social media sources such as Facebook and Twitter to see your feeds directly in BlinkFeed. The UI isn't drastically different from stock Android.

A lot of third-party apps are preinstalled on the phone, including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, News Republic, and TouchPal. We couldn't uninstall all of this bloatware from our review unit. You can customise the look of your phone using the Themes app. HTC's Sense Companion provides custom reminders and suggestions based on your device usage and location. If it has a new suggestion, it also shows a floating icon for you to tap and interact with it. During our review, it did not offer any meaningful suggestions, but it might learn your usage patters over a longer period.

HTC Desire 12+ performance, cameras, and battery life
The Snapdragon 450 performs decently in the HTC Desire 12+. While navigation was smooth, we did have to deal with longer load times in a few apps. If your usage is limited to calls and using WhatsApp, you might not be bothered, but if you play games, the loading times can get a little annoying. While Clash Royale ran without any issues, we did see some stuttering and choppy frames while playing Hitman Sniper. We also observed slightly heavier battery drain while playing 3D games.

We ran our standard set of benchmarks to see how the HTC Desire 12+ fares against other devices in its price band. In AnTuTu, it managed to clock 70,680 points, similar to what the Moto G6 (Review) and Samsung Galaxy A6+ (Review) scored. Both are also powered by the same processor. We got 759 and 3,704 points in the single-core and multi-core tests in Geekbench 4 respectively. The phone managed 33fps in GFXBench T-Rex, and 809 in 3DMark Slingshot.

The camera app on the HTC Desire 12+ is basic and fairly easy to use. It has quick toggles for mode selection, beautification, filters, and Bokeh mode. We did not like the two-step process to change flash settings, and would have preferred a quick toggle instead. The Desire 12+ is quick to focus and adjust exposure based on available lighting. It has a Ubifocus mode which takes five shots at one time, giving you the option to refocus afterwards. You also get HDR, Portrait, Sports, Landscape, and other modes to choose from.

Photos taken with the Desire 12+ were average at best. You will need to enable HDR manually since it lacks auto detection. In daylight, we found that the camera was quick to focus and got the exposure right most of the time, but we noticed a loss in detail zooming in to the image. The Bokeh mode is easy to enable and has good edge detection. We encountered a bug which caused the phone to not save photos shot in this mode, but a quick restart fixed it for us. Macros are decent, but it isn't easy to get the phone to lock focus when you want it to. We also tried shooting in Flower mode and found that autofocus refused to work.

Low-light camera performance isn't great either. Again, shots look decent on the phone's screen, but zooming in reveals a loss in details. Photos taken with a light source at a distance appeared quite grainy. The Desire 12+ has a selfie flash which is helpful in low light. Selfies are good enough to be shared on messaging apps, but they aren't as good as ones taken by the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Y2 (Review).

Video recording maxes out at 1080p for both the front and the rear cameras. There is continuous autofocus but it isn't as quick as some of other phones we've tested recently. EIS is supported but we did not see any significant difference in clips recorded with it enabled.

In our HD video loop test, the phone went on for 9 hours and 43 minutes, which is below our expectations. With light usage, like WhatsApp and a Gmail account set up on the phone while we used it through the day, we found that it could last till the next morning. The supplied charger is rated at 7.5W and needs close to two hours to charge the device to 100 percent.

Verdict
HTC's Desire 12+ is the latest smartphone offering from the company in the mid-range segment, but we feel that its asking price is too high for what it offers. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC is available in significantly cheaper phones such as the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Oppo A71 (2018). The HD+ display is disappointing. If you are in the market for a smartphone with a budget of around Rs 20,000, you might want to choose between the Redmi Note 5 Pro (Review), the Moto X4 (Review), and the Oppo F7 (Review) instead.

One for the bezel-less future: Oppo Find X vs Vivo Nex

Smartphone breakthroughs are happening rapidly and if bezel-less displays were anything to get used to, smartphone manufacturers are working continuously to bring us closer to the idea of a truly bezel-less display. Enter, the Oppo Find X and Vivo NEX; two of the most exciting recent Android devices of 2018, which transform the bezel-less experience of a smartphone to whole new dimension.

Last week, the Vivo Nex just about got everyone’s attention flaunting an all-screen display by integrating an in-screen fingerprint scanner, an under-display earpiece, and a pop-up selfie camera to move all the important sensors elsewhere so as to gain the maximum screen. If that took you a week to sink in the feeling about future smartphones, brace yourself for the Oppo Find X, which not only boasts of a larger screen space but also a top module that elevates and consists of all the relevant sensors including a Face ID-like technology.

With an aim to achieve the largest screen space, we’re here to identify where the BBK siblings have struck their similarities while distinguishing how these devices differ in their ways of cramming in features. Let’s take a look.

Design & Display:

Vivo NEX S

Upon its launch a week ago, the mass-produced model of the Vivo Apex concept smartphone came with a pop-up camera that moved like a periscope out from the top edge. The Vivo Nex S comes with a 6.59-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,316 pixels and a tall aspect ratio of 19.3:9. The OLED panel with deep blacks and vivid colors offers the second largest screen-to-body ratio of 91.24 percent and 338 pixels for inch.

While the sensors on the front find it replaced in an all-new fashion with a pop-up selfie camera and Screen SoundCasting technology in place of an earpiece, the back of the device is another breathtaking feature. The glass back refracts light in its seven different components with the help of a diffracting pattern that’s embedded right under the glass, creating a rainbow-ish effect in normal lighting.

Oppo Find X

Coming to terms with the newest stud in town, the Oppo Find X is a beaut to look at. With a smaller bottom chin than the one on the Vivo Nex, the Find X straight up wins the ‘largest screen space’ title. Oppo claims that the Find X features a 93.8 percent screen-to-body ratio, the first smartphone to achieve the feat. The Find X has done so by employing an elevating module at the top which boasts of the numerous sensors on the front and the dual camera setup at the back, which is hidden in normal conditions.

Just look at the transition from software to mechanical movement at the top and you’ll see the thing of “Whoa” that this phone is. If the full-screen 6.42-inch AMOLED FHD+ display with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,340 pixels, without a notch, doesn’t inspire you, twist it over. The Find X on its release will be available in two variants - Bordeaux Red and Glacier Blue; both distinctive in itself with a fading dragnet of purple and teal on the sides of the read panel. The back panel is clean and only has the Oppo and Find X branding on it, due to the fact that the rear cameras are tucked in with the mechanical module at the top.

Winner: Oppo Find X

Hardware:

Both the Find X and Nex S comes powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with Adreno 630 GPU, 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal memory. With so much of storage available internally, neither Oppo nor Vivo has offered a micro SD card slot with their flagships. While both devices are the same in the connectivity front offering Bluetooth 5.0 LE, USB Type C port for data and charging, WiFi and GPS, it’s the Find X which makes room for an additional NFC chip.

Winner: Oppo Find X, by whiskers!

Biometrics:

Vivo’s version of an all-screen device pitched the fingerprint sensor of its smartphone on its displays, which is also what’s employed on the Vivo Nex S. The device comes with an in-screen fingerprint scanner which scans your finger from within the display and is in its third generation currently. While the optical sensor at the bottom of the device detects and verifies a fingerprint precisely, it can only be used when a device’s screen is lit or the whole device is lifted off a surface.

In this aspect, Oppo has clearly pulled the Android version of the iPhone X with the perfect alteration to Apple’s 3D unlock features. The slider module that Oppo has packed at the top has a 25-megapixel front camera with a dot projector, a ranging sensor, an infrared sensor and a flood illuminator, all of which combined gives a breathtaking 3D recognition authentication for your phone. That combined with the software tricks that smoothen out the physical movement of the slider module makes it a beauty to watch. The O-Face recognition as Oppo likes to call it will work on any lighting condition and will even be able to detect a face among a million people.

Winner: Oppo Find X

Software & Battery:

Both the Vivo Nex S and Oppo Find X come running the latest Android 8.1 Oreo with heavily skinned FunTouch OS 4 and ColorOS 5.1 on top the respective devices. For a layperson, both these operating systems are inspired by the iOS and have a steep learning curve to get through, since a stock Android version is always the one that people would prefer.

What these two phones differ slightly is in the battery and charging mechanisms. While the Oppo device comes with a 3,730mAh battery with VOOC Fast Charging, the Vivo smartphone comes with a larger 4,000mAh power unit which is charged by a faster 22W charger. Thus the Nex S not only lasts more in terms of battery but also charges significantly faster than the Oppo Find X.

Winner: Vivo Nex S

Camera:

The Vivo Nex S sports a dual 12 MP (f/1.8, 1/2.5", 1.4µm, Dual Pixel PDAF) + 5 MP (f/2.4) sensors with 4-axis Optical image stabilization, phase detection autofocus, and dual-LED dual-tone flash. These sensors are then powered by AI which develops imaging with the help of AI portrait shots and scene detection. The front-facing selfie camera, albeit a powerful one packs a small 8MP pop-up unit with an aperture of f/2.0, which opens up only when switching to the front camera inside the camera app.
