Update: Snapdeal makes it difficult for buyers to return mobiles and other electronic product

Snapdeal has quietly tweaked its return policies for electronic items, which makes it difficult for someone to abuse them. The e-commerce site’s tweaked policy entails that a buyer needs to furnish a document from the brand’s authorized service center within seven days, and only then will a return request be processed. Between Snapdeal, Amazon India and Flipkart, returning an electronic item isn’t easy any more. We look closely at the return policies of all three e-commerce platforms to find out, which is the most user friendly.

Let’s start with Snapdeal first. The tweaked policy on the returns page reads, “We require a document from the brand/OEM’s service center confirming that the delivered item was defective. We will carry out a quality check to validate the complaint before processing any request for refund/replacement. Returns/replacements will be accepted for only those items which are found to be faulty/ defective.”

In essence you won’t be able to return an electronic product on the basis of being ‘unsatisfied’ with it. According to ET , this policy has been followed by Snapdeal for quite some time now. But the sellers on the e-commerce site are only being informed about it now. With a valid document now required, this policy will protect sellers against scenarios where one would buy an electronic item, use it for some time, and then return it under the pretext of it being faulty or unsatisfactory.

To put this into perspective, earlier this year Amazon India put an end to the refund policy for electronic items like mobile phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, monitors, cameras, camera lenses, headsets and speakers. Buyers under these categories won’t be able to apply for a return on the basis of ‘no longer needed’. Instead they will only be entitled to a free replacement in case the product is damaged. The replacement policy is also only applicable if the damaged product is returned to the seller within 10 days of delivery.

Flipkart too recently revised its returns policy and cut down the returns window from 30 days to 10 days. This policy is applicable on electronics like mobiles, tablets, laptops, cameras, gaming hardware, small home appliances, computer accessories, mobile accessories, camera accessories, smart home appliances, and wearables among others.

Again the return process is only applicable on damaged, defective or products that are ‘not as described’. A buyer will also need to flag their purchase within 10 days of delivery. Flipkart also has a return verification process, wherein a representative will help in assessing the issue. If the problem is not solved, the seller will arrange for a replacement. In case a product is not available for replacement, then the money will be refunded to the buyer.

The return policies of all three platforms are almost on par with each other. That said, they are still too draconian, and nothing better than what you get from a brick and mortar store.
