Star India has launched its new website starsports.com for enhancing viewer experience for sports consumption.

Currently in its beta form, the site is cricket focused at present but will transit into an all sports digital platform over the next three to four months. Star India chief operating officer Sanjay Gupta appeared to indicate as much in an interview to Business Standard where he revealed that Star India is investing over Rs1 billion in the technology meant for enhancing viewer experience for sports consumption.

The website boasts of a video experience for cricket fans that includes high definition video streaming, an advanced player that can be individually controlled and the ability to catch up on the game through both a video scorecard and a video timeline that marks the key moments of the game.

The video timeline, which STAR claims is first on any such websites, marks key moments of a match, while it happens, allowing users to go back, revisit the moment and jump back into the action in real time.

It has also revamped the commentary section, which not only focuses on explaining the action ball by ball, but also pulls in real time conversations on the social media while the match is on. Additional feature, the video scorecard, brings the statistics alive with video clips of key moments supported by detailed analytics and graphics.

According to reports, starsports.com will remain predominantly a site for the Indian market and by the looks of things will be run by the team at Star India and not the Singapore headquartered ESPN Star Sports management.

Further when asked by Hindu Business Line how the broadcaster expected to monetise content online, Gupta said,"As of now, the content is free. Gradually, we will follow the subscription-led revenue model."
