Update: Vodafone begins doorstep facility for Aadhaar linking

#1
Have you received messages from your telecom operator asking you to link Aadhaar number with your phone number? Of course, you must have. It is based on a ruling issued by the Supreme Court that asked government to verify all phone numbers in India -- and the last date of which is February 6, 2018. To link Aadhaar to phone number you need to visit your nearest store of your telecom operator -- which, for many is a pain. But now, your telecom operator along with UIDAI are trying to make things easier. You will now able to link your phone numbers with Aadhaar at your doorstep. And if you are a Vodafone users and live in rural part of the country, things are going to be much more simpler for you.

Vodafone India announces their plan to visit door-to-door to help customers link their mobile numbers to Aadhaar. This initiative -- as the telecom operator claims is especially for rural India -- who probably aren't socially connected or know much about the phone-Aadhaar linkage process.

Vodafone Mobile Vans will link Aadhaar - phone number at doorstep
Vodafone plans to deploy two mobiles vans to travel to the villages and smaller towns of Rajasthan, facilitating doorstep SIM upgrades and Aadhaar verification. These two Vodafone Mobile Vans will actually travel to almost every corner of the rural Rajasthan, reach out to people who use Vodafone network and help them link their numbers with Aadhaar. Alongside the Aadhaar linkage, Vodafone will also let these customers from rural India to upgrade their existing SIM cards to 4G network.

Commenting on the initiative, Vodafone India Business head of Rajasthan, Amit Bedi invites the residents of rural Rajasthan to use this opportunity and says, "The Vodafone Mobile Vans will ensure that our existing 2G/3G customers are able to enjoy the benefits of Vodafone SuperNetTM 4G with free SIM upgrade done at their doorstep."

Link Aadhaar - phone number via OTP
Meanwhile, to link Aadhaar with phone number, you are, for now, asked to give away your biometric details to your telecom operator -- which may create a lot of security concerns. Taking that into account, UIDAI is trying to make it easier and safer for people to link Aadhaar with phone number. It is going to roll out a new process from December 1 for Aadhaar linkage. The new process will allow you to link your phone numbers with Aadhaar by sitting at home and without sharing your biometric details with the telecom operators. This can be done by One-time-password (OTP).

Telecom operators are instructed by the UIDAI to connect the 12-digit identification number via OTP received on their mobile phones. Early last week, telecom operators including -- Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, BSNL and the rest -- were asked to present a blueprint for the same (OTP linking process), which has now been approved by the UIDAI. "Their (telecom operators') plans have been approved... They have come and we have told them they will implement (the process) from December 1," UIDAI CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey had told PTI. He also says that the new methods will "help achieve the (re-verification) task in the given timeframe (February 6 deadline) and make the whole system more secure as it will prevent misuse of mobile number by unscrupulous elements." You can link your phone number to Aadhaar by sitting at home.
