WhatsApp could soon add ‘Live Location’ and ‘Change Number’ features; here’s what you need to know

While WhatsApp’s look and feel has remained the same over the years, the popular messaging app has constantly been updated with a number of new features, ranging from end-to-end encryption to Snapchat-like Stories. WhatsApp is now reportedly brewing two new features – Live Location and Change Number.

Citing @WABetainfo on Twitter, Android Authority reports the ‘Change Number’ has already made its way to the beta version of WhatsApp for Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile. The publication further explains that the feature will let you change your phone number without losing the existing messages or group data. The feature will also allow users to alert select contacts about the number change. According to the report, the feature will not be enabled by default, which basically means users will require to manually switch it on under the Settings menu in the app.

The ‘Live Location’ feature, as the name suggests, is expected to share your coordinates in real-time. Though not a lot of information is available about this feature, it could be similar to real-time location sharing feature that was recently introduced in Google Maps. At the moment, users can send their locations to contacts. The inclusion of the real-time location feature makes a lot of sense as it is gradually becoming a common feature in relevant mobile apps in India, also its one of the largest markets. Interestingly, the feature has also been spotted n the current version 2.17.150 WhatsApp beta for Android.

While the two features make a lot of sense for WhatsApp users, do remember that not all the features in the beta version of the app make it to the final version. Just recently WhatsApp rolled out an update that entailed a slew of bug fixes, performance improvements and some important features such as the ability to revoke messages after being sent. The feature will allow users to revoke the message after five minutes of being sent. Do note that this feature is for WhatsApp’s web client for now.

Another important feature that is in the pipeline is the ability to send and receive money to contacts. “India is an important country for WhatsApp, and we’re understanding how we can contribute more to the vision of Digital India. We’re exploring how we might work with companies that share this vision and continuing to listen closely to feedback from our users,” a WhatsApp spokesperson told BGR India.
