Kamal Haasan's much-awaited film Vishwaroopam will not hit the screens, both Direct-To-Home (DTH) and theatres, as scheduled. The original plan was to release the movie in DTH platform on January 10 and January 11 in theatres, but now it was stated that the revised dates will be announced later. Theatre owners have been objecting Haasan's decision to release the movie first on DTH.

Revised dates will be announced later, Haasan could not to be reached for comments

"In-line with the postponement of the release date of the movie Vishwaroopam [Tamil & Telugu]/Vishwaroop [Hindi] across theaters and on the DTH platform by Rajkamal Films, we have stopped taking bookings for the movie premiere," said Shashi Arora, CEO- DTH/Media, Bharti Airtel.

Vishwaroopam to hit theatres first

Kamal Haasan’s novel move to leverage technology and create a new revenue stream for his film Vishwarooopam through a direct-to-home television premiere has been torpedoed by the traditional players — theatre owners and distributors keen on protecting their turf.

By Tuesday night, the actor-director, Tamil Nadu Film Theatres Owners’ Association and producer-director Keyar together decided that the film will hit the theatres first. “The day and date when it is expected to be released will be decided at the second round of meeting tomorrow [Wednesday],” said R Pannerselvam, general secretary of the association. In an age when the money a movie makes in the first few weeks of its release often determines its success, Mr. Haasan was hoping the DTH screening would be a big help.

An official statement from Airtel CEO for DTH/Media Shashi Arora said: “In line with the postponement of the release date of the movie Vishwaroopam across theatres and DTH platform by Rajkamal Films, we have stopped booking for the movie premiere that was scheduled for January 10 at 9.30 p.m.”

Ever since the actor announced his ambitious plan for DTH, it has been a match of bobbing and weaving with a section of theatre owners and distributors who view the move as being detrimental to the theatre business.

Last week, the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Federation decided not to screen and distribute movies that are released on DTH platform. Subsequently, bookings were open only in a limited number of theatres for Vishwaroopam.

Kamal Haasan’s much-talked-about Vishwaroopam, mired now in controversy, is all set to hit homes via DTH a week after its theatrical release. And, it has also been decided to revise the price downward from its earlier Rs 1,000. According to sources, it will work like any other film in the service provider's ‘pay-per-view’ movie catalogue.

Though it was originally planned to be premiered on the DTH platform on January 10, a day ahead of the movie’s theatrical release, the actor and film maker had to yield to pressure from theatre owners, who protested the initiative, saying it will prove to be adverse to the theatre business in the long run.

Following this, there was confusion as some theatres opened booking counters assuming that the movie will be released on January 11, while many continued to protest.

Finally, putting an end to the week-long confusion over the release of his multi-lingual film, Kamal Haasan today announced the release date as January 25, but did not say a word about his DTH plans. Theatre owners too seem to have agreed to offer him over 450 screens across Tamil Nadu.

In another development, according to sources, RaajKamal Films International (producer of Vishwaroopam) has sent mails to DTH service providers saying the DTH screening of the movie in three languages is now scheduled for February 2.

In its earlier mail sent to them, the production company has said the response in terms of assured booking was “abysmally low” contrary to what it would have liked to have achieved on account of the short promotional window of less than seven days.

It also said the company is reviewing the pricing strategy “to elicit more response and to benefit those who have booked for the January 10 telecast window”.

After buckling under pressure from theatre owners, Kamaal Haasan's spy thriller Vishwaroopam is all set to premiere on direct-to-home (DTH) platforms on 2 February, almost a week after the theatrical release.

The Hindi version of Vishwaroopam will be released on 1 February across India. The Tamil and Telugu versions of the film will be released on 25 January as announced by the actor earlier.

"While the original DTH premiere was on a Thursday (January 10) and hence inconvenient for most, I am now releasing it on a Saturday at the end of the first week of release (January 25) which will be on February 2," Haasan said in a statement.
