The Vodafone subscriber addition numbers are now beating that of Bharti Airtel. Bharti added about 2.81 million subscribers in the month of March, while Vodafone added about 2.85 million subscribers. This time Vodafone has taken over from Bharti and this has happened after Vodafone has expanded.

Bharti has added about 2.81 million subscribers in the month of March, while Vodafone has added about 2.85 million subscribers. This has happened after March 2007 that was the time when Bharat Sanchar Nigham Limited (BSNL) had taken over from Bharti and that happened because year-end push had been given by BSNL. We have seen this month (March 2009), BSNL numbers have gone up sharply in this month.

But if you look at the top two players, this time Vodafone has taken over from Bharti and this has happened after Vodafone has expanded. Till August 2008 Vodafone was operating in 15 circles and post that it has launched in 7 circles and now it is operating in 22 circles.

Vodafone is not listed and so Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) numbers are not available on quarterly basis but we get to know some of the Vodafone numbers from international reports. Every quarter numbers are little delayed in case of Vodafone, those numbers are quite comparable to Bharti. Bharti and Vodafone until have not got into the price cut war and we do not expect because sometime back if you see Bharti has been saying that they don’t want to get into the number games. They are more interested into revenue share rather than subscriber market share and that is the stand they have been taking for the last couple of quarters. They want to be best as far as the revenues and the margins are concerned in the telecom industry. But this is first month that Vodafone has crossed Bharti, and if you see till August 2008 Bharti’s net additions was about 0.9 million subscriber higher than Vodafone that was the kind of run rate and that was the difference between the two, but now it has gone in favour of Vodafone.
