Certainly, the general idea (at least in some way, shape or form) will be followed by the film and story from the X-Men: First Class comic book which Marvel debuted in 2006 as a mini-series, later continued as an ongoing series. The original five X-Men (for the most part) is pursued by the book in their teens working for Professor X as it was when the X-Men comic began back in the 60’s.

The role of Professor Charles Xavier back when he was a younger man still figuring out his telepathic powers will be played by McAvoy. The initial friendship between Xavier and Erik Lensherr will be followed as they team up with some other mutants to battle a huge global threat by the film. A “rift” occurs between the two men which lead to the conflict chronicled in the first three “X-Men” films during the adventure.

It’s unclear whether McAvoy will shave go bald for the production or which other mutant characters will appear. The Magneto role has not been cast yet. In the previous pictures, Patrick Stewart played Xavier and Ian McKellen portrayed Magneto.

For his dramatic roles in “Atonement,” “The Last King of Scotland” and “The Last Station”, McAvoy is famous. In the hit thriller “Wanted”, he also starred opposite Angelina Jolie which has faced numerous hurdles getting a sequel off the ground. His upcoming slate includes Robert Redford’s thriller “The Conspirator.”

As per planning, X-Men: First Class will be about the young Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast and others who attended Xavier’s school with them. Zak Penn revealed he was offered to direct the spin-off in 2007, which he explained, “The original idea was to have me do a young X-Men spin-off, a spin-off of the young X-Men characters. But someone came up with a pretty interesting idea [...] it was this guy who worked with me named Mike Chamoy, he worked a lot with me on X3. He came up with how to do a young X-Men movie which is not what you’d expect.” Later, the idea was compared to the comic book series X-Men: First Class by Penn and in July 2008, Fox filed the title X-Men: First Class with Production Weekly. The project was joined by Josh Schwartz in May 2008. Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg will produce.

Bryan Singer later signed on to direct X-Men: First Class in December 2009, returning to the series that he started with X-Men and X2: X-Men United. Singer was quoted as saying, “[t]his is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where their relationship took a wrong turn … [t]here is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from ‘X-Men’ will figure into the plot, though I don’t want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain.”

The writer behind the 2008 Keanu Reeves movie Street Kings is Jamie Moss. To pen a new screenplay for X-Men: First Class, Jamie Moss has also come on board to pen a new screenplay for X-Men: First Class. Singer repeated in March 2010 that its axis in the relationship between Professor X and Magneto will be founded by the film and the point where their friendship soured, while also detailing the beginning of the school for mutants, with younger incarnations of some characters with new actors in roles of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, etc.

When asked if Hugh Jackman might appear as Wolverine, Singer only shrugged. Instead of directing, Bryan Singer will be producing X-Men: First Class, Fox revealed during March 2010. The film is wanted to start production as soon as possible in order to release it in 2011 by the studio, and Singer is unable to do it due to his commitment to a Jack the Giant-killer adaptation. Sources indicated that Matthew Vaughn was in discussions to direct the film
