Xbox 360 Reaches 30 Million Units Sold

The console war has been underway for quite some time, with the top three devices, the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, duking it out for supremacy and for the number one spot in sales. But while the NPD charts show that the Wii's reign is undisputed, don't count out its rivals just yet.

Microsoft has just revealed that its Xbox 360 console has sold over 30 million units to date and is experiencing record growth as opposed to the last year, with sales growing with more than 28 percent. This is considerably better than its rivals, the Wii and PS3, and a bit unexpected considering the worldwide recession that has impacted sales.

Over the course of its lifetime, Xbox 360 users from the US have spent more than 14.5 billion dollars on it, including hardware, games and downloadable content, allowing Microsoft to flaunt its supremacy in the field of electronic entertainment.

“We've always been confident that Xbox 360 offers more entertainment value than any other console on the market, and these latest numbers show that consumers agree,” revealed Microsoft's Don Mattrick. “We expect our growth to continue to accelerate. Our news at E3 next week will underscore our commitment to bringing blockbuster entertainment experiences to everyone and to growing the Xbox entertainment brand globally.”

Number showoff continued, as the North American console managed to generate a 5.9 billion dollar revenue from sales of games for third-party developers, which is considerably more than the PS3 and Wii combined.

As no Microsoft corporate chest beating would be complete without Xbox Live, the statement reveals that there are over 20 million Xbox Live users out there, as the service has expanded to 26 countries around the world. More than 1 billion pieces of content have been downloaded by these users, who have become quite interested in the service after the New Xbox Experience was launched.

Look forward to more news about the console as E3 starts this week.
