Yahoo to bring video chat on iPhone, Android

Makes video calls to computers too and works on 3G network along with WiFi

Apple went all Lady Gaga over the new blingy FaceTime video chat technology on the iPhone 4. To compete with that Yahoo has readied new video chat functionality in Yahoo Messenger App for Apple iOS and Google Android platforms. Most interesting part is that the new video chat feature in Yahoo Messenger App will function with PCs as well. In a briefing with Reuters, David Katz, Yahoo's vice president of Mobile for the Americas region, slipped out the plans of offering mobile app versions of Yahoo Messenger with built-in video calling capabilities anytime soon.

Yahoo already has Yahoo Messenger App for both iOS and Android platforms. With a new update the Yahoo Messenger for iPhone 4 and fourth generation iPod touch will get video calling capabilities. With the new Yahoo Messenger App version iPhone 4 owners would be capable of making video calls over WiFi as well as 3G Network. Apart from that video chat feature in Yahoo Messenger will not only work for smartphones but also allow it to make video calls to desktop version of Yahoo Messenger.

Looks like Apple's FaceTime feature has just got a competition and the new Yahoo Messenger app has been approved by Apple. Apple said in a statement: "We do allow apps on the App Store that support video calling on WiFi and 3G networks."

Yahoo Messenger is a free App that is available for iOS and Android. One thing we surely know is that this new update will bring video calling only on iPhone 4 and fourth generation iPod touch. But there's no word on whether the feature would be limited to Android 2.1 or Android 2.2 Froyo already. Expect the new Yahoo Messenger App to arrive anytime soon.
