Diabetes Survival First, use some common sense during the holidays (and throughout the year). Follow the recommended ADA diet, know how many calories you need (or do not need) and be prudent in your choices for those holiday meals. If you are going to make a mistake, do it on the protein side, not on the high carbohydrate / high glucose side. As all carbohydrates are eventually converted to glucose and the problem is glucose, avoid simple sugars and easily digested carbohydrates. That would be all sweets such as candies, cakes, pies, cookies, etc.
