Tata Sky beats Dish TV to become new leader in DTH market; adds 30 lakh customers in second quarter

Tata Sky has become the biggest DTH service provider in India. The operator added 30 lakh new subscribers between April and June, which allowed it to beat Dish TV. At the end of June 2019, Tata Sky commanded a market share of 32 percent in the DTH market in India. Sun Direct saw the second major growth by adding 9 lakh customers during the same period. Airtel Digital TV, on the other hand, added 4 lakh new customers during the period ending June 2019.

At the end of June 2019, Dish d2h added only two lakh new customers, which affected its leadership in the market. The new industry data from TRAI also showed that DTH industry is growing rapidly in the country. The industry added 3.17 million or 31.7 lakh customers during the period between April to June this year. At the end of August, the telecom regulatory notes that the country had a total of 5.4 crore active DTH users.

The active customers is calculated basis average of those paying on day 7, 14, 21 and 28 of a month. At the end of April – June quarter, Tata Sky has become the new leader with a market share of 32 percent. Dish TV is the second major player with a market share of 31 percent. Airtel Digital TV is third in the market with a market share of 23 percent. Sun Direct is fourth and it has a market share of 14 percent. It also controls nearly 70 percent of the market in South India.

While Dish TV may have lost its leadership to Tata Sky, it can still make a comeback. There are already plans of a merger between Dish TV and Airtel Digital TV being worked out. The proposed merger will create a new leader with a combined market share of nearly 54 percent. The consolidation is coming to DTH market, which is facing threat from OTT players, who don’t need to play by the rules of the new tariff regime. However, DTH operators are holding steady for now by offering free additional channels and are considering revision of NCF to attract new customers.

MUMBAI: Animal Planet will premiere season two of ‘Crikey! It’s the Irwins’ starting on 10th October at 9 pm.

In the new season, Terri, Bindi and Robert continue Steve Irwin’s mission to bring people closer to animals and inspire them to become Wildlife Warriors who work together to protect and preserve our environment and its wildlife. Never before has it been so important to spread their message of conservation to ensure an abundance of wildlife for generations to come.

In the season premiere, the family builds a spectacular new home for their crocodiles in preparation for Australia Zoo’s 50th Anniversary. Robert helps move all their crocodiles and alligators by hand, starting with Bosco, the most aggressive croc in the Zoo; Bindi investigates a knee problem on Forest, the Zoo’s largest giraffe; and Terri helps Harley the koala find love to help keep the koala population thriving.

Later in the season, Robert continues to take on daring missions such as swimming with Gloria, a 12-foot reticulated python in the Zoo’s Crocoseum and learning to handle his first-ever wild rattlesnake in Arizona. Terri returns to her home state of Oregon to do a special check-up on Brady the cougar, a species she is extremely passionate about, and Bindi and fiancée, Chandler Powell, release animals that have been nursed back to health at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

Crikey! It’s the Irwins is produced for Animal Planet by Eureka where Paul Franklin, Chris Culvenor, Wes Dening, and Rod Parker serve as executive producers. MUMBAI: After discovering India’s musical prodigies for a decade, Sony Entertainment Television (SET) is all set to present the 11th season of Indian Idol starting 12th October. The show will air every Saturday and Sunday at 8 pm.

MUMBAI: Bigg Boss Kannada is all set to make comeback on Colors Kannada starting 13th October at 6 pm. In its seventh season, the show will feature 17 distinguished celebrities from various walks of life who will be lodged in the iconic Bigg Boss house for 100 days.

For viewers on the move, Colors Kannada will also showcase Bigg Boss Kannada on Voot – Viacom18’s video-on-demand platform. Within hours of its on-air telecast, the show will be available on the app to ensure viewers do not miss a single moment from the exciting new season.   Reliance Jio will now charge 6 paise per minute for calls to other networks

Reliance Jio has announced that it will start to charge for outgoing voice calls to other networks. The company will now start charging its prepaid and postpaid users 6 paise per minute for outgoing calls to Airtel, Vodafone, BSNL and others.

The company has said that this will not affect calls to landline phones or incoming calls. To compensate for the chargeable calls, Jio will be offering free data of equivalent value with top-up vouchers.

For prepaid users, outgoing calls to other operators will be charged 6 paise per minute from their talk time amount. In the case of postpaid plans, customers will now be billed at 6 paise per minute for off-network calls and will be entitled to more free data.

The company has introduced special IUC (Interconnect Usage) Top-Up vouchers for prepaid users which will offer free outgoing minutes and data as well. For now, there are four IUC Vouchers available for Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50 and Rs 100.

The cheapest Rs 10 voucher offers 124 minutes of outgoing voice calls to other networks and 1GB of data The Rs 20 voucher provides users with 249 minutes of off-net outgoing calls and 2GB data. The Rs 50 IUC voucher brings 656 minutes of outgoing voice calls to other networks and 5GB data. The top of the line Rs 100 voucher offers 1,362 minutes of non-Jio outgoing calls and 10GB data.

Postpaid users will be directly billed 6 paise per minute with additional data similar to that offered to prepaid users.

Jio also confirmed that it will remove levying charges to users for offset calls once Interconnect Usage Charges or IUC becomes zero. IUC is the cost paid by one telecom company to another when users make outgoing calls to users on other networks. Fixed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, IUC charges are said to be done away starting from January 1, 2020, and Reliance Jio says this will be a temporary change that is set to end by December 31, 2019.

  BSNL’s new Bonus Data Offer to provide 1.5GB more data to prepaid users

BSNL has introduced the new Bonus Data Offer that will allow select prepaid customers to get more data. The state-owned telecom company will be giving additional data benefits to its customers for a limited period of time. The Rs 429 prepaid plan from BSNL will provide customers with 1.5GB more data, in addition to the 1GB data that they get on a daily basis as per the plan. Which means that the company will give 2.5GB data per day to all its users for Rs 429. It is important to note that the offer will be valid only in the month of October but the company may revise the plan next month, given its history.

The new Bonus Data Offer from BSNL is similar to the company’s Bumper Offer that has been available for BSNL customers for quite some time. The Bumper Offer allowed BSNL customers to get 2.2GB more data on a few prepaid plans. Although the add ons are different in both offers.

The Rs 429 plan by BSNL for prepaid customers will be valid for 81 days and gives 1GB data per day to all its customers. In addition to this, the plan comes with unlimited voice calling and 100 free SMS per day. The latest offer from BSNL is already live in UP West.

The company is giving out additional data on several other plans as well. The plans starting from Rs 349, Rs 399, Rs 448 will also get 1.5GB additional data under the offer.

BSNL has been struggling to survive owing to the burden of low finances. It has attempted keeping up with the rivals, especially Reliance Jio that disrupted the market with its dirt-cheap telecom plans.

BSNL is the fourth-largest mobile telephone provider in the country. The government has mulled the merger of BSNL with another state-run telco MTNL.

BSNL has reintroduced its Rs 96 prepaid recharge plan. Also, the operator has revised its STV118 and PV153 plans as well.

The Rs 96 plan was launched this year but it was for a promotional period of 90 days. However, now the plan has been reintroduced again.

The prepaid voucher of Rs 96 is known as the Vasantham Gold plan or PV96. Now BSNL has brought back the PV96 for a promotional period of 90 days. The plan will go into effect on October 5, 2019, reports TelecomTalk. Earlier the plan was effective from July 5, 2019, for a promotional period of 90 days.

The new BSNL Rs 96 plan comes with a validity of 180 days and offers unlimited local and STD calls to any network including roaming except to Mumbai and Delhi circles. Apart from calling, the plan also offers 100 SMS per day. As per the report, the validity of these freebies would be 21 days.

The two new revised plans bring PRBT (Personalised Ring Back Tone) service to these recharges. The Rs 118 STV comes with a validity of 28 days and it offers 250 minutes per day calling to any network, and 0.5GB data per day, post which speeds will come down to 40 Kbps.

The prepaid voucher of Rs 153 also comes with a validity of 28 days. Like 118 STV, this plan also offers 250 minutes of calling every day to any network and 0.5GB per day with an after FUP speed of 40 Kbps.

BSNL recently extended the validity of Rs 1,699 prepaid plan. The operator has announced that the validity of its Rs 1,699 prepaid plan has been extended to 455 days until October 31.

Throughout history, hate and conflict have been part of the human experience. From horrific extremes such as the Holocaust or the Rwandan genocide, when hate has fueled mass destruction, to everyday incidents like playground bullying or malicious trolling on social media, hate shapes our lives in myriad ways. And while all humans have the capacity to hate, few understand what sparks it and transforms it into a destructive force.

Discovery Channel to launch new show ‘Why We Hate’ on 20 OctExecutive produced by filmmakers Alex Gibney and Steven Spielberg and directed by Geeta Gandbhir and Sam Pollard the show explores one of humanity’s most primal and destructive emotions – hate. At the heart of this series is the notion that if people begin to understand their own minds, they can find ways to work against hate and keep it from spreading.

“The issues explored in ‘Why We Hate’ are more relevant than ever. Discovery is tremendously proud to delve into this critical subject with legendary filmmakers Alex Gibney and Steven Spielberg and the teams they have assembled. Drawing on journalism, deep historical investigations and ground-breaking research in psychology, biology, and neuroscience, ‘Why We Hate’ traces the evolutionary basis of hatred and its powerful impact on individuals and societies throughout human history. The science behind the behavior is a powerful tool to help us understand what drives conflict, enabling people to have real, tough conversations about these issues and behaviors.

Helping to unpack these complex issues in each episode are experts including cognitive scientist Laurie Santos, evolutionary anthropologist Brian Hare, journalist and author Jelani Cobb, extremism expert Sasha Havlicek, international criminal lawyer Patricia Viseur Sellers, and neuroscientist Emile Bruneau.

The show Discovery added works to contextualize the many instances of hate in everyday life: the violent rivalries that erupt at sports matches, the hateful rhetoric that runs rampant on social media, and the heated disagreements that flare up over political partisanship, race, religion, and social beliefs. The series follows brave individuals seeking to quell violent conflict and correct misperceptions, hears from former terrorists and architects of genocide, and allows viewers to consider lessons from some of the most brutal and enduring examples of hate throughout the world.

Among ideas explored include how group-based thinking shapes people’s perceptions and their behaviors. The area that illustrates this the most is sports, where deep loyalties are based on a few different factors such as regional identity. A deep love for one team often leads to a hatred for its rival, which can spill into detesting opposing fans. As Santos explains, “…soccer fans tend to be the most tribal…not just about the soccer players that they care about, but also about the other fans. And that’s interesting because it suggests that it’s not just about the competition.” Santos goes on to draw parallels to today’s political environment: “Political partisanship is getting more and more tribal every day. The distance between the us and them in this country is getting bigger, and it’s developing more of the uglier sides of tribalism.”

The show also highlights the personal stories of those who have lived a life of hatred, including a lifelong member of a hate group whose childhood memories “are of standing on a picket line telling people they were going to hell.” The series encounters people whose beliefs led them to commit acts of hate so severe they ended up in jail, but who managed, finally, to disengage from those ideologies.

Along the way, the show reveals contemporary links to ancient and evolutionary behaviors and uses science as a basis for unlocking the truth about hatred and human nature.

  Sony Pix gears up for festive season with three movie premieres

MUMBAI: With the festive around the corner, Sony Pix has lined up three mega premieres, a month-long ‘Pix Diwali Dynamite’ festival and a 10-day long ‘House of Horror’ Halloween special.

Starting with ‘Skyscraper’ starring Dwayne Johnson on 6th October, ‘Wonder Woman’ starring Gal Gadot on 13th October and the biggest premiere of the year ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ starring Chris Pratt on 20th October, all three guarantee a Sunday full of action and amazement. Skyscraper and Jurassic will premiere in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, giving viewers an opportunity to watch in the language of their choice.

Additionally, starting 1st October, ‘Pix Diwali Dynamite’ promises blockbuster movies every Monday to Thursday at 7 PM. This is to be followed by a 3-day weekend dhamaka where viewers will get to enjoy dynamite movies – from Fast & Furious and The Mummy to The Incredible Hulk and Pacific Rim: Uprising – all day, 26th October onwards, again with the option of watching in the language of their preference.

Lastly, Sony Pix becomes the ‘House of Horror’ starting 22nd October, where viewers can watch horror movies like Annabelle, House of Wax, Orphan, The Conjuring and others every night at 11 pm as part of the 10-day Halloween special. The Horror festival will culminate on 31st October with the Indian television premiere of the movie ‘Halloween’ which is a direct sequel to a movie of the same name released in 1978.

Sony Pix is set to expand this offering at the biggest pop-culture event of India – Comic Con – kickstarting in Hyderabad on 12th and 13th October. The viewers can experience their favorite movies and characters and win amazing merchandise at the event. So, get set for back-to-back Hollywood amazement, all month long, only with Sony Pix.
