Google drops H.264 video, pushes WebM adoption in Chrome - nairrk - 01-13-2011

Bangalore: Google has announced that it is withdrawing H.264 support from the HTML5 component in Chrome. This is in bid to promote the adoption of Google's internally developed WebM format and Ogg Theora.

Although Google concedes that H.264 is a popular format but it said that the opening of the VP8 codec has resulted in speed improvements and widespread adoption. The changes would be made in two months time.

Google said the details were announced in advance as it hoped various sites would voluntarily make the switch from HTML5 to WebM. However, it is not yet known whether extensions or plugins will bring the codec back.

It is assumed that switching from H.264 to WebM may be not be very useful for Google as there may crop several issues related to patents and royalty payments. Also a majority of the videos in web are HTML5-enabled. using H.264. In this scenario, how the WebM as a format will fair is yet to be seen.
