Pakistani parliamentary panel seeks ban on foreign TV content - waytobala - 01-07-2013

A Pakistani parliamentary panel has requested the government to ban the airing of all foreign content in any language during prime time.

As reported in the Daily Times, the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting suggested that if the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) rules allow airing of foreign content then the content should only be subtitled in Urdu or English.

PEMRA was also asked to strictly monitor TV operators and take prompt action over violations during a committee meeting. The committee also said that the permitted 10% of foreign content should be proportional to the local content and added that television channels were misusing foreign content.

Information and Broadcasting Secretary, Rashid Ahmed agreed with the committee's proposals that foreign dramas were damaging local culture and should be banned.
