Moto Z vs Samsung Galaxy S7 vs LG G5: Price, specifications and features compared - nairrk - 10-04-2016

Earlier today, Lenovo launched its flagship Moto smartphones, called the Moto Z and Moto Z Play in India. One of the key highlights of the Moto Z is its semi-modular functionality that lets you add snap-on modules called Moto Mods. These mods also extend the functionality of the smartphone. But the Moto Z is not the only modular smartphone; LG’s G5 also boasts a similar concept, allowing you to add external modules right from added battery to camera drip, 32bit Hi-Fi digital-to-analogue (DAC) amplifier and more. The Moto Z will face fierce competition from the likes of Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5 among other high-end phones in the market. We compared all three smartphones based on their price, specifications and features, and here’s how they fare.

Price and availability: Lenovo’s Moto Z will set you back by Rs 39,999. It will go on sale starting October 17 at 11:59 PM on Amazon India and Flipkart. The LG G5 is priced at Rs 39,990 and is available to purchase from Amazon India, Flipkart and retail stores. Samsung’s Galaxy S7, on the other hand, is priced at Rs 43,400 and can be purchased from Amazon India, Flipkart and retail stores.

Display: All three smartphones are equipped with QHD displays running at a resolution of 1440×2560 pixels, and covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. The Moto Z is equipped with a slightly larger 5.5-inch AMOLED display, the LG G5 sports a 5.3-inch IPS LCD panel, whereas the Galaxy S7 flaunts a 5.1-inch QHD super AMOLED display.

Chipset, RAM and Storage: The Moto Z and LG G5 are equipped with Qualcomm’s 64-bit Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor (four custom Kyro cores) paired with Adreno 530 GPU and 4GB of RAM. The Galaxy S7, on the other hand, is powered by Samsung’s homebrew Exynos 8890 octa-core processor paired with Mali-T880 MP12 GPU and 4GB of RAM. All three smartphones come with 32GB onboard storage and microSD card slot for further storage expansion.

Camera: In the photography department, all three smartphone cameras are equipped with features such as Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), phase detection auto-focus (PDAF), 4K video recording and slow motion video recording capabilities. However, there are a few key differences. The Moto Z sports a 13-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/1.8 with LED flash, the Galaxy S7 features a 12-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/1.7 (largest aperture among flagship smartphones) and larger 1.4µm pixels.

LG’s G5, on the other hand, sports a dual-camera setup — a 16-megapixel camera of aperture f/1.8 and 8-megapixel wide-angle camera of aperture f/2.4. For selfie lovers, the Galaxy S7 and Moto Z boast 5-megapixel front-facing cameras, whereas the LG G5 comes with an 8-megapixel snapper. Motorola has also added an LED flash to the selfie camera.

Battery: The Moto Z is armed with a 2,600mAh battery with Turbo Charging feature. Motorola claims that even 15 minutes of charging is enough to offer a battery life of up to eight hours. The LG G5 and Galaxy S7 are both equipped with 3,000mAh batteries. While the G5 supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 support, Galaxy S7 supports fast charging and wireless fast charging feature.

Connectivity: The LG G5 and Moto Z feature USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer. Motorola also uses the same port for audio output as well. All smartphones feature 4G LTE with VoLTE voice calling support, Bluetooth 4, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11ac and NFC. Also, while the Moto Z comes with a single SIM card slot, the Galaxy S7 and LG G5 feature dual SIM card slots.

Operating System: All three smartphones run and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS. While Motorola’s UI is closer to stock, LG has a layer of custom UX 5.0, whereas Samsung has its custom TouchWiz UI running a top.

Miscellaneous features: Moto Z comes with a fingerprint scanner, embedded inside the home button on front, same goes with the Galaxy S7 as well, whereas LG has the scanner placed on the back panel, just below the camera module. LG’s fingerprint scanner also acts as a power / sleep button as well. Moto Z comes with water repellent nano coating, making it splash resistant. Galaxy S7 comes with IP68 certification for water and dust resistance, and also comes with a heart rate sensor. The LG G5, on the other hand, does not feature water resistance facilities.

Modular Functionality:  One of the key highlights of the Moto Z is the semi-modular functionality using Moto Mods. These are basically modular plates that can be snapped at the back of the Moto Z. There is a ‘16 pin connector’ to allowing the Moto Z and Moto Mods to interact with each other. Some of the Moto Mods include JBL’s SoundBoost add on speakers, InstaShare mod (which isa add-on projector), Hasselblad True Zoom cameramod with optical zoom and Xenon flash, and Power Pack to addextra battery. The price of Moto Mods start at Rs 5,999 and goes all the way up to Rs 19,999.

The LG G5, on the other hand, has swappable modules, called the LG Friends. These modules include the CAM Plus – with an additional battery and dedicated camera buttons, the LG 360 CAM — which adds two 13-megapixel cameras with 200 degrees wide-angle lens, and there is B&O Play Hi-Fi Plus speakers for playing high-definition audio files. There is also a 360 VR goggle that simulates the experience of watching a 130-inch TV, and an LG Rolling Bot, which is a companion device that rolls like a ball and captures photos and videos with its embedded 8-megapixel camera.

Now, to add any Mods on Moto Z, you don’t have to power off the phone. The same cannot be said about the LG G5. To add any of these LG Friends mods, you need to power off the device and remove the battery. This may eventually result in wear and tear of the modules too.
