Google redesigns Maps for India; adds a new home screen - nairrk - 05-03-2017

Google rolled out a new home screen on Google Maps for Android, specifically designed for users in India. The new home screen loads fast so that millions of people across the country who come online can discover and share great places, even during patchy internet connections.

“The Maps team will continue to evolve our products to make them useful no matter where you go or what you do, especially for the millions of people coming online for the first time,” said Cathay Bi, Product Manager Google Maps, in a statement.

Now, when users open Google Maps app, they will instantly see a directions card with different modes of transportation. If users like to access a certain route while on the go without using data, they can save the route to be used offline. Below the directions card, users will also see icons highlighting some of the other useful features on Maps — from getting a first impression of a place with satellite imagery, to real-time information about traffic around them, to more details about public transport lines.

After users update to the latest version of Google Maps, they will see newly added shortcuts on the home screen that will help them explore the app in just a few quick taps. Last month, Google Maps introduced a new feature that will help users remember where they parked car.

All that Android users have to do is tap the blue dot and then tap “Save your parking” to add their parking location to the map. This will show a label on the map itself identifying the parked car.

Google Maps adds ‘Quick Actions’ menu, revamped home screen for users India

Google is rolling out an important update for Google Maps for Android users in India. The latest update adds new features to the home screen including a new Quick Actions menu. The app will also now show shortcuts, allowing users to see directions, saved offline maps, and other map details, all in a single tap. The search giant also claims that the home screen now loads faster than the previous versions. Google says it has optimized the app to work efficiently even when in spotty connections something which Indian users suffer from a lot.

Cathay Bi, Product Manager Google Maps, writes in a blog, “Now when you fire up your Google Maps app, you’ll instantly see a directions card with different modes of transportation. Whether you’d like to take the bus to Connaught Place in New Delhi or you are planning to go by foot to a new mall that just opened nearby, you can start planning your route with a single tap. And if you’d like to access a certain route while you’re on the go without using data, you can save the route to be used offline.” Google Map users in India can download the updated version from Google Play.

Once updated to the latest version, you should be able to see the Quick Action menu at the bottom of your screen. The Quick Action Menu has replaced the live traffic updates, present earlier in the app. In the Quick Actions menu, users get three sub-sections – Get Directions, Map Details, and Saved Offline Route. From the Get Directions section, you can choose to take a car, taxi, public transit or walk to your desired location.

The Map Details section lets you choose from satellite or traffic view modes and download the area for offline access. The new features also allow one to look for public transportation available in their area. Much like the Save Offline mode, the Save Offline Route option now downloads and saves your last route offline. This would make it convenient for you to use it later when you are commuting and don’t have data connectivity.

Among the recent updates, Google introduced Share Location feature in the Google Maps app. This allows users to share their real-time location with friends and family. The app also allows users to now save their parking location for easy navigation to their vehicle in the parking lot.
