MUMBAI: Video streaming service Netflix has partnered Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP for its first original movie from India, ‘Love Per Square Foot’. The film will be exclusively available to more than 109 million Netflix members in 190 countries simultaneously early 2018 globally.

With this release, RSVP is the first Indian production company to pioneer the distribution of a key title exclusively via streaming, enabling a global audience of entertainment enthusiasts on Netflix to enjoy the movie on the day of its launch.

The announcement comes close on the heels of a partnership with Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment for a new multilingual Netflix original series, based on the book, Bard of Blood. The new deal built on the partnership that began in December 2016 wherein Netflix secured a long-term deal with Red Chillies to be the global home to Shah Rukh’s upcoming and past films.

Produced by Bollywood veteran Ronnie Screwvala’s new production company RSVP, ‘Love Per Square Foot’ is a quirky romantic comedy that chronicles a guy and girl who enter a marriage of convenience to buy a flat in Mumbai, the city of their dreams. It is a co-production with Still and Still Pictures. It features Vicky Kaushal along with Angira Dhar for whom this will be the Bollywood debut. Critically acclaimed actors Ratna Pathak, Supriya Pathak and Raghuvir Yadav feature in prominent roles in the film. ‘Love Per Square Foot’ is the feature directorial debut of film and stage personality, Anand Tiwari.

Screwvala said, “How, where and when great stories are watched is changing every day. Our younger audiences chose their mediums. We love to disrupt and innovate in this space and this is a first of its kind for South Asia. We are thrilled to come together with Netflix and break new ground by reaching film-lovers around the world directly with Netflix.”

Netflix founder and CEO Reed Hastings said, “We’re always looking for stories that bring joy to Netflix members, and Love Per Square Foot is a gem that we’re proud to have on the service. RSVP is a visionary partner, and we want to continue working with them and the best of Bollywood to deliver compelling stories to consumers around the world.”

Netflix international original series VP Erik Barmack had recently that the platform will increase its local content and aims to release five to six originals a year.

Currently, Netflix has three Indian series under production. These include Sacred Games, which is directed by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, Cricket and corruption drama Selection Day, which is based on the book by Aravind Adiga, and supernatural detective series Again, which is written by Quantico’s Marisha Mukerjee.
