Star issues disconnection notice to Reliance Big TV - nairrk - 12-26-2017

MUMBAI: Broadcaster Star India has issued a disconnection against beleaguered direct to home (DTH) operator Reliance Big TV for non-payment of licence fee and non-execution of the subscription agreement.

Star India’s bouquet of entertainment and sports channels will be discontinued from the platform three weeks from the publication of the notice.

Leading pay-TV broadcasters Star India, ZEEL, Sony Pictures Networks India, IndiaCast Media, Discovery Communications, and Sun TV Network have filed recovery petitions in the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) against Reliance Big TV.

As reported earlier, the DTH company, which provides DTH service under Reliance Digital TV brand, owes more than Rs 100 crore to leading broadcasters like Star India, ZEEL, Sony Pictures Networks India, TV18, Viacom18, Sun TV, and Discovery Communications India.

Sun TV Networks has claimed dues of Rs 30 crore. Star India’s dues are said to be in the range of Rs 22 crore. IndiaCast Media’s dues are approximately Rs 14.62 crore. Discovery has claimed dues of Rs 7.5 crore.

Sun TV has gone a step ahead and filed an insolvency petition against the DTH operator in the National Company Law Tribunal (NCTL), Mumbai.

Reliance Big TV was on the verge of shutting down till its parent company found buyers in Pantel Technologies and Veecon Media and Television. The DTH operator has submitted the bank guarantee for renewing the DTH licence.

Reliance Digital TV is the smallest among the six pay DTH platforms in the country with a measly 2% share of the 65.31 million active pay DTH subscriber base, as on 30 June. Dish TV is the biggest DTH operator with 24% share followed by Tata Sky (23%), Airtel Digital TV (21%), Videocon d2h (20%).

Launched in August 2008, Reliance Digital TV is a profitable DTH company as per the last available information for the fiscal year 2016.

During FY16, Reliance Big TV had reported a net profit of Rs 232 crore on a total income of Rs 638 crore. In the FY15, the net profit was Rs 12 crore while the total income stood at Rs 994 crore.
