13 Digit mobile numbers coming to India from July onwards? - nairrk - 02-21-2018

There has been a lot of rumours off lately, which say that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is planning to change the mobile numbers to 13 digits. The Mobile Indian has reached out to BSNL for clarification and the spokesperson has told us that the brand is not planning to introduce 13 digit protocol for its customers.

The spokesperson further clarified that the BSNL will bring the new 13 digit protocol to a machine to machine (M2M) communication and it is not meant for the general public. This simply means that BSNL customers need not to worry about the transition from 10-digit numbers to 13-digit numbers. For the uninitiated, M2M communication is a form of communication where the network devices exchange information and take actions without any manual assistance of humans.

This type of communication is generally used in warehouse management, robotics, traffic control, logistics services, supply chain management, fleet management, remote control and more. Further M2M communication also plays an important role in the Internet of Things (IoT).

The Mobile Indian received a copy of the letter sent to its partners ZTE Telecom and Nokia Solutions Networks and it also confirms the same. The letter says that 13-digit M2M numbering plan will be implemented from Jule 1, 2018 and from this date, all M2M mobile communication will be allocated to 13-digit numbers only. The letter further reveals that migration of existing 10-digit M2M numbers to 13 digits will start latest by October 1, 2018, and will end on December 31, 2018.
