Darwin keen to host Champions Trophy - Sathish - 03-11-2009

Melbourne (PTI): With security in the subcontinent becoming a cause of concern ahead of the Champions Trophy, the Australian city of Darwin on Wednesday threw its hat into the ring as a possible venue if the ICC shifts the much-delayed biennial event Down Under.

The ICC decided earlier this year to switch the event from Pakistan to Sri Lanka because of security concerns and is ready to consider other venues if the island nation is also ruled out.

Although Australia has never hosted the Champions Trophy but Northern Territory Cricket chief executive Andrew Ramsay said the ICC is aware of its capacity and might consider the country as a prospective venue.

"Cricket Australia is responsible for fixtures but we work closely with them when we put on events," Ramsay was quoted as saying in The Age.

"From my point of view, they know we are here and they're aware of our capacity (at TIO Stadium) and we're comfortable should the need arise they would consider Darwin as an alternative cricket venue," he added.

The TIO Stadium, which has a capacity of about 17,000, last year hosted international matches when Australia beat Bangladesh in three one-dayers in August-September. Pakistan was scheduled to host the biennial event in September-October after it was cancelled last year because of the growing tension in the volatile nation.
