Hardik, Karthik named in ICC World XI for Windies T20I at Lord's - nairrk - 05-03-2018

Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya will be a part of the ICC World XI for the solitary T20I against the Windies at Lord's on May 31, an ICC release confirmed on Thursday (May 3).

Among others confirmed to participate in the game are Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Thisara Perera and Rashid Khan. The match is being held to raise funds for the reconstruction of Ronald Webster Park in Anguilla, the Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua, the Windsor Park Stadium in Dominica, the A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground in the British Virgin Islands and the Carib Lumber Ball Park in St. Maarten, that were damaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria last year.

The game has also been given official T20I status. As a result, Pakistan's star all-rounder Afridi, who announced his retirement last year, is set to be make a brief comeback to international cricket.

Late last month, England's limited-overs skipper, Eoin Morgan, was named as the captain of the World XI unit. The left-hander had expressed his delight after being chosen as the skipper and felt dearly for the cause towards which the players will be contributing. "I am delighted to captain the ICC World XI at Lord's in May against the West Indies," Morgan had said. "The cricket family always comes together to support worthwhile causes and this one-off T20I, featuring some of the best players in the world will be a great spectacle at the home of cricket. I am sure the sporting public will come out in force and help raise money and awareness towards restoring parts of the Caribbean hit by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September last year, which ripped through many communities in this beautiful part of the world," Morgan added.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for fans of the Indian team to come out and watch these two flamboyant players, who bring both class and star value to what I'm sure will be a memorable match at Lord's," Giles Clarke, the former ECB chairman who is supporting the cause, said.

"People would remember Pandya's valiant 43-ball 76 against Pakistan in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy last year while Karthik too has played Test cricket at Lord's. He has been in terrific form and recently blasted 29 off eight deliveries and sealed victory over Bangladesh in the final of the Nidahas Trophy with a last-ball six."

The reigning World T20 champions, Windies, will be led by Carlos Brathwaite while the rest of the squad will boast of star players like Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Samuel Badree and Andre Russell.
