MIB asks TV channels to desist from indecent portrayal of children in dance reality shows

MUMBAI: The ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has issued an advisory to all the private channels to desist from showing children in a vulgar, indecent, suggestive and inappropriate manner in dance reality shows or other such programmes.

The ministry has asked TV channels to exercise maximum restraint, sensitivity, and caution while showing such programmes.

The ministry stated that the Inter-Ministry Committee (IMC) has also recommended that a suitable advisory be issued to all private satellite TV channels after examining the issue. The IMC has been set-up by the MIB to examine the violations of Programme and Advertising code.

In its advisory, the ministry has stated that children between the age group of 5-10 years or of lesser years dance to popular Bollywood tunes or other local songs in dance-based reality shows.

It further stated that the child participants, in these reality shows, enact and imitate grown-up actors which include some inappropriate dance movements executed by kids. “The gestures, dialogues and dance moves performed by the kids appear to be suggestive and obscene for their age,” it added.

The ministry has asked the channels to follow the provisions contained in Programme & Advertising codes prescribed under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 & the Rules framed thereunder.

Under the Programme Code, the TV channels are prohibited from telecasting content that denigrates children in any manner. Rule 6(1)(I) of the code says, “No programme should be carried in the cable service which denigrates children.”

Further, Rule 6 (4) of the code states that “care should be taken to ensure that programmes meant for children do not contain any bad language or explicit scenes of violence”.
